Help Will the unlocked HTC Desire HD work in India?

Well just tried calling a LOT of retailers in Chennai and...I wouldn't want anyone else to go through the experience. The Univercell guy just picked up and hung up the phone without even saying hello after a fancy pre-recorded message. Half the numbers people either didn't pick up or the number was listed wrongly on the website and said not in service. Only the StudioCell guy &WaveTel woman picked up and spoke coherently and told me that they are only expecting it (possibly!) by the 1st week of Jan here!.....

I tried using FlipKart but with the credit card option and it worked ok on the flipkart site but timed out everytime it tried to access the bank 3d verification system!!! (and this was with both Firefox and Internet Explorer)

Oh cruel anti-HTC devils above...why do you treat me so! Have I not patiently waited!!!

They should change their tag line from "Quietly Brilliant" ... to "Irritatingly Understocked"

....will try out the Cash on Delivery option soon........ sigh!....
 
first impression compared to my SGS

screen is definately better in SGS, but DHD screen is also very close, I am happy with it
external speaker is slow compared to SGS,

apart from these 2, in all other areas DHD rocks, super fast and amazing :)
 
color is only 1 in india they say.. its brown but HTC has made its design awesome, I cant explain how good the design and material is even compared with SGS

and the SGS use to lag like hell, I use to keep killing the apps, and DHD is like butter :) this is how android software needs to be developed, all other companies (samsung, motorola etc) should make software like HTC

Thanks for your information. But I dont know when it will be available in Nagpur. Still no information from retailer about DHD stock in Nagpur. :(

GPS navigation --DHD have pre installed Google map for India (around 200 mb), but Google navigation is not available in India, DHD also have option of premium navigation (works offline, no need of active internet connection). I had used this premium navigation feature it it works wonderfully (used GPS navigation first time so i was very happy). There seems to be some restriction on using the premium navigation feature (basically it is on trial for one month and after that you have to buy this- Rs 370 for one month and around 1300 for a year. you will need active internet connection to activate trial).
GPS doesn't catch signal if you are indoor, but once you are on the road signals are there.

Price of DHD, carry case/pouch & screen guard - I went there and told him that 'XYZ' shop is selling DHD @27k (Taiwan made with MRP published of Rs.32.9k) with pouch and screen guard. Within a minute (with bit of formalities on his face & he acted that he is checking some of the papers from his drawer and is doing me some favor :p), he brought down his quote of @27.5k for DHD to @27k for "DHD + screen guard protector + pouch" :D. I didn't buy because I had no idea of what quality of screen guard protector and pouch he is offering me (China made cheap stuff :confused:). He told me that screen guard protector is of ~Rs. 475 and brown colored pouch is of ~ Rs. 525 & he reiterated his deal @27k for "DHD + screen guard protector + pouch" but I was quite apprehensive :o. Later he himself showed me that the pouch was covering 10% of back-camera & hence not the best fit. Upon seeing my low confidence on 'pouch' + 'screen guard', he promised that within 2 days - he is going to get new stock of those & I can later take those freebies from him. Overall - he appeared a good vendor but ..

I need to check some other big shop and will buy then (should be this weekend). This is not to save few bucks but to have right quality screen protectors for mighty DHD. :D

PS - The pouch was a carry case and not the belt one.

For TBT on a DHD, you can use Google maps for which TBT is free but needs an internet connection for GPS, whereas HTC-TomTom offers GPS without internet but you need to purchase TBT.

Navigation - Ok then, I will enjoy one month free navigation and as some other folks have suggested before, I would try the free "brut mod google maps".
