CES Sprint let down...

DarkNeo

Android Enthusiast
So I see Verizon is announcing a crapload of new Android devices, many of the dual core...Hell even ATT is getting some (getting ready to lose the Iphone). Our beloved Sprint...nothing :(. I guess they expect us to enjoy the EVO a few more months...

well, the EVO Shift was announced while CES was happening. I was hoping to hear of more excellent HTC devices.

So this may be off-topic, but does anyone know where I can find the changelogs for the different Evo hardware revisions?

its almost overkill with all the touchscreen options VZW has. i mean, is there THAT MUCH of a difference between the fascinate, droid X, BIONIC, Thunderbolt, etc? kinda redundant.

Haven't you heard the old saying " Saving the best for last" :D

I would be expecting Sprint to launch something new (successor to the EVO) mid summer. I personally would rather have one or two good, solid choices and a FAR cheaper plan than have a million (of roughly the same) phones to choose from and pay out the but for the same services I get from Sprint at a fraction of the cost.

I swear, every CES someone posts one of these about Sprint.

Here's a clue. Sprint doesn't really announce their flagship products at CES.

It has occurred to me that Sprint might have a successor to the Evo all lined up, but they're delaying it because the Evo is still a hot item. Maybe they're giving the Evo until summer when they typically release their new phones.

Yeah, the EVO is still a hot and somewhat hard to find phone. No need to rush to replace it as their marquee device just yet. I'm sure they are gearing up the next great phone for early summer. We'll know in 5 months.

+1

I feel Verizon over saturated the market with similar phones

What a weak showing by sprint on CES.
Very dissapointed. looks like Verizon took the lead again.
Wheres a real Evo 2? with a dual core.
Shift? dont think so.

I think it's disappointing Sprint isn't announcing ANYTHING at CES. It would be nice if Sprint had a 4" thin and light android phone. The EVO is GREAT, but a little heavy and thick compared to some of the stuff AT&T announced. But you also have to keep in mind that none of the stuff announced is actually out. The Atrix will be out first, but the other stuff is likely all Q2 2011. Meaning, Sprint can announce something at CTIA and still release it before these monster phones are out.

But it is better to have many awesome phones, regardless of what some may think. I'd rather be oversatured with phones and have a choice and availability! Choice is always good and if you have 4-5 high end android phones, then maybe it wouldn't be so hard to get the EVO (which is still sold out in many stores). Although updates wouldn't be prio

I wish Sprint came out with a Galaxy S phone without the keyboard. It would rock.

VZW tends to heavy-hand it's name and presence on phones on it's network. Sprint seems to be a little less so. As a result, CES just isn't the right place for Sprint to be a major player. It's never going to be able to do what VZW and ATT do at these types of events.

That said, there are a lot of phones being announced that just aren't game-changers. Evo was a game-changer (features and Wimax). The next potential for other carriers will be LTE-capable products.

As pointed out in an earlier post, I'd like to see Sprint stick the the approach of fewer phones, great plans, and good coverage. What I really like most since moving to Sprint at Evo's launch is that I get the most of out the phone and plan combined. The other carriers might be able to out-notch the Evo, but it's going to come at a heavy price when paired with their data plans' costs.

Lay low and keep doing a good job, Sprint.

I agree with @DarkNeo's frustrations about lack of phone selection for Sprint.
In reading this forum, many jokes came to mind about the size of the Evo but I will refrain. :)
For those of you talking about CTIA. I'm not familiar with CTIA, could you elaborate? I'm somewhat familiar w/ CES & like others, I was expecting....er hoping for great things from Sprint but all I've heard is "Look at this new phone we'll have. It's the same thing as the Evo, only we added a keyboard." If I wanted to make a phone call with my laptop I would save myself the expense of a new phone! Yes, I know I'm exaggerating but it's just frustrating to be bound to a contract with very few options available.
Enough griping though. I would like to know more about the spring/summer release theories. I'm stuck in a contract for a while so I need some hope that something better (NOT bigger!) is around the corner!

WMC will bring some info from the manufacturers. Samsung is already promising more tabs and phones. CTIA is where Sprint like to drop their lineup though so that will be what we are looking for. As for your question about what is CTIA:

CTIA WIRELESS

-Evo device with 4.3 inch (or larger) screen, 12mp (lol) camera, 5mp ffc, dual core cpu, 4g, hdmi, kickstand, etc.

-Epic 4g like device with 4.3 inch (or larger) super amoled plus screen, 5 row qwerty pad, 8mp camera, 1.3mp ffc, duel core cpu, 4g, tv out of some sort, etc.

-LG opitimus (high end version) device with tegra 2 dual core, 3.7-4.3 inch screen, 4g, 8mp cam, 2mp ffc, tv out, etc.

- Motorola (yeah I said it lol) high end device with dual core tegra 2, 4-4.3 inch QHD screen, 5-8mp camera, vga-2mp ffc, tv out, possibly a qwerty pad (just throwing it out there).

Ill stop at here. This of course isn't an exahaustive list but I have a feeling that the major android manufacturers want to get high end 4g dual core phones on the big 4 networks (including Sprint). Plus its good to stay positive :)

So guys, am I way off??

I think your predictions are realistic and probable.

I think there will be a dual core EVO 2 -like phone, like you said (only minus the 12mp cam).

I think the others are a good possiblilty too... just not sure about the Moto.

The first three you mentioned would be a great lineup... all they really need, especially if Sprint keeps their awesome plans with unlimited data.

Who cares? Until EVO 2.0 everything is just a different version of what we have now.

I don't want the EVO treated like every other phone, when something fundamental has change and the EVO is ready to leapfrog other phones "again" then and only then should they put out a new one.

quadcore HTC EVO Tablet running Honeycomb with 10 hours of battery life weiging just under 1 pound with a 3d screen and nvidia graphics chip.

The shift only lacks the FFC and has a smaller screen but it is still ahead of all but two other phones on Sprint. Certainly no downgrade from anything but maybe nothing different from an EVO or Epic. I will be waiting though til March for Sprint announcements. I will be looking on Tuesday just to hear if the iphone launch on verizon takes place. Though it will absolutely hurt at&t sales I have to wonder if it will truly be that big for apple. My guess is yes but we will see. I think it won't generate a lot of new customers for apple but more transfers from at&t to the better network. (sorry to stray off topic)
