Root Newbie Stuck trying to ROOT

Newbie
Ok so Ive decided to root my milestone and try the 2.2, but I cant seem to get past the very first step. Ive downloaded all the tools and software that I think I need and was going to go with the G.O.T mod. Ive read that before I can use Open Recovery that I have to flash with the vulnerable recovery and thats where Im stuck. I open rsd lite, locate the vulnerable recovery sbf file, power up my phone holding up and power, it goes to bootloader mode, I hook it up to the cable and it shows up in the RSD program, I select it and hit start and immediately get a message on the phone that says Critical Error: 1337 510B. What did i do wrong already? lol

1. You do not have to root to get 2.2. or use Open Recovery.
2. Instead of flashing vulnerable recovery first flash the GOT 2.2.1 and then use Open Recovery, you do not need root for that.
3. Boot into open recovery and apply the fixes.
4. Done.

Thanks for your reply, Thats what I thought, but I would like to do a nandroid backup before I go any farther. Do i copy the folders from the open recovery to my sd card, or do I install it from laptop, where exactly do I put the folders.

You copy the OpenRecovery folder and the Update.zip to the SD card by plugging it into your computer. Once those are in place you can do a nandroid back up.

Ok I have those files copied to my SD card and I can go into astro and view them but how do I create a backup ?

I'm sorry for being such a noob, but this is all new to me.

Ok, update.....I powered my phone on using X+power key and got the screen with the exclamation mark, then I hit volume up key and camera key to access menu, when I click on apply update I get a message that says cannot mount or something along those lines and it also said directory doesn't exist. I just want to make sure I have a backup of my phone so I can revert it back to stock if need be, or is that even necessary?

Update2. ...when I open menu by pressing volume up+camera I get a message saying: "can't open cache/recovery/command"

Ok I will paypal 20.00 to anyone who can help me get my phone rooted and flashed to 2.2 with bug fixes and updates. PM me with a number to reach you.

thanks

When I click start it goes through the first phase fine but as soon as it starts the second part i get Critical Error: 1337 510B on my phone and the RSD screen looks like this....

Guys,

I cannot remember for sure as I have not read anything about it in some time, but I believe there were various versions of bootloader and in order to be able to flash the vulnerable recovery one's bootloader had to be a certain version or lower.

Does anyone remember this stuff?

Well it would be helpful if the OP posted more about his phone. Are you in the same position as cinandro? Are you with MTS in Canada?

When in bootloader mode what does it say on your Milestone screen?

Im in the US, on a local carrier, Milestone A854 on bootloader screen I see this:

Bootloader
2c.6c

Battery OK
OK to Program
Connect USB
Data Cable

What's your local carrier? It doesn't actually matter...just weird you wouldn't post more so it is easier to help you.

And like I said to cinandro I believe the A854 does not have a locked bootloader and you should be able to run Motorola Droid roms.

WHat info do you need, I will gladly post anything as Im more grey headed than I was yesterday.

Firmware version
2.1-update1

Baseband version
c_01.07.00R

Kernel version
2.6.29-omap1
dcn637@zch45lnxdroid24 #1

Build number
MILER_X1_00.26.1

It's relevant to know your carrier to know what radio frequencies are required for you phone to work.

I believe Carolina West runs on 800Mhz which is the same as the Verizon Droid. You should be able to use any 2.2 Motorola Droid rom.

I do know that verizon roams on towers in my area so does that mean there on the same frequncy?

Is flashing a rom for droid easier than milestone?

It's an SBF file so you will need to use RSD lite like before.

After you have flashed the SBF you will probably need to set up your APN for data which can be found in Settings>Wireless & networks>Mobile networks>Access Point Names

You should copy down the information that is in Access Point Names before flashing the 2.2 SBF (it probably says Carolina West, click on it for the detailed information).

Its updating as we speak, on the APN is it a code or something simple? Sorry for all the questions but youve been very helpful.

Oh well, it erased all my information in the phone, the number , the min and everything else thats needed to make the phone useable as a phone lol.

I guess I should have warned you that you would need to restore some things.

You should ensure you are on Carolina West's network though. Or else you're roaming on Verizon...

As for your phone numbers they should be restored when you sign back in with your gmail account if you had google sync on before. The same should happen with your apps.

You might want to try this for your apn if you didn't write it down:
apn name="Carolina West Wireless" numeric="310995" mcc="310" mnc="995" apn="1" user="cww@cwwbrew.com" server="*" password="cwwcdma" proxy="204.117.91.203" port="9201" mmsproxy="204.117.91.161" mmsport="9201" mmsprotocol="2.0" mmsc="http://mms.cwwmms.com/cww/mms.php" type="mms, HTML Basic"

I would suggest setting up your apn before signing in your google account.

I was referring to the MIN and MID numbers within the programming, I got the phone part working and sms, but no DATA, I have no clue where the settings you gave me go in the phone as I cant find anything like that anywhere in it. Does anyone have any idea how I could get data back?

thanks

Your MIN is your phone number. If your phone works then you have your MIN.

But like I said above please go to Settings>Wireless & networks>Mobile networks>Access Point Names and see if you can get the required information from Carolina West.

please go to Settings>Wireless & networks>Mobile networks>Access Point Names and see if you can get the required information from Carolina West.

In my Settings>Wireless & networks>Mobile networks> I have data enabled, which is a checbox....checked, Data Roaming which is a checkbox...checked, and System Select, which is a menu for home or automatic and automatic is checked.

Thats all I have there, Is there possible something in the internal programming (##7764726) that I can change? Thats where I had to go to set min and mdn and the cdma sys id.

Yeah I figured there might be some differences between the GSM and CDMA version of the Milestone. The thing is you and cinandro are in the same boat so it might be better if we get one of your phones working first. So I'm going to try and help you.

I think I found a work around. Try selecting Voice Dialier in your app drawer and say "Open APN" this should show Verizon and you should be able to edit it to the APN information given to you by Carolina West.

Or you could try downloading an app that let's you switch APN's. I'm really not sure if this would work or not.

Last resort, if none of these work we'll probably have to do some stuff through root access.
