Root if i upgrade to 3.70 will i get unrooted?

If you want to update to 3.70, and you have root, you would need to unroot, first. I do not recommend this option since it will update your hboot. I know it doesn't matter anymore since unrevoked can root all hboot versions, but I still maintain that updating hboot is completely unnecessary, and not a good idea.

If you rooted with unrevoked, you can *technically* just flash the stock recovery and accept the OTA, but that puts your phone in a weird state, and is widely considered a bad idea.

My advice is that you should flash a ROM based on 3.70. You can either flash a custom one, or one almost stock. Here's a very close to stock one:

[ROM] RUU SuperSonic EvO 3.70.651.1 OTA - Stock - Sense - Deodexed & Odexed Version - xda-developers

Choose the deodexed one if you want to ever flash themes or most mods. If you want to stick with as close to stock as possible, use the odexed one. If you've never flashed a custom ROM, you can find instructions in the Rooting for Dummies thread. Just make sure you make a backup first.

You will also need to flash the new radios. You can get them here:

[ Radios ][ 12-17 ] All EVO Radio, WiMAX, PRI, NV & HBoot versions - xda-developers

The combo update should work fine. I recommend you make a backup with either CW 2.6 or any version of RA so that you have a backup of your wimax keys. You can find other threads about verifying your wimax keys, so you should do that before and after. Anyway, flash these from recovery like any other update. If you feel that this is too much information, you can just unroot, update, then reroot, but I will never recommend that as a method that I would ever do myself.

i used revoked, i DL the driver and ran revoked. i never made backups or anything like that is it time i do that before moving onto your steps or is it to late?

It's never too late :). You should make nandroid backups before doing anything drastic (Flashing roms, mods, etc.). Heck, no matter what, you should always have at least one nandroid backup. But, it's never too late. You should most definitely make one before doing what I've suggested. FYI, though, if you choose to unroot, update, then reroot, another reason why it's a bad idea is that any backups you make now will no longer be restorable after the update. You can't restore nandroid backups between hboot versions.

ie: i use nandroid, then unroot, update, reroot, i wont be able to recover the nandroid?(sorry have massive headache from today not thinking clearly)

That's correct. I know updating your ROM and radios manually through recovery sounds daunting, but it's really the best way to go. I'm always around if you need help with any steps.

alright well thanks ill give this a shot tomorrow seeing its pretty late and need get up early for work. i too am near los angeles =D

Haha, cool. Good place to be ;) (well, maybe not depending on just how close to LA you actually are :p). I too have to get up early for work, so...

Let me know if you have any more questions.

I have rooted my evo with Unrevoked and now see that I can update.
I don't mind being unrooted, I haven't done much with it since I've rooted it.

If I do the update, will it all work just fine and be unrooted?
Do I need to unroot it first?
Should I skip the update?

What are your thoughts?

Thanks,

I am in no way trying to be rude, but if you read this thread from start to finish, all those questions have been answered in detail.

I've read this many other places, but I've never seen a reason. Is this considered dangerous? Has it been known to brick phones?

I'm an unrevoked user, and I'd like to update my phone. But the changes in the 3.70 update really aren't worth the effort required in learning how to either unroot the phone and start from scratch, or flash a rooted ROM and radios. I'm sure someone like you probably has the process down well enough that's its not a terribly difficult or time-consuming process, but I'm sure it would be for me.

Trust me, everything I've done was a time consuming process the first time I ever did it. Nothing is worth doing or learning if you don't take the time to learn it. The thing is, of all the options above, the easiest is probably unrooting, accepting the OTA, then rooting again. Accepting an OTA while you have s-off, even if you flash a stock recovery, is known to cause weird problems. To get things back to normal, you'd have to run unrevoked again, most likely. Save yourself the trouble, and don't do it that way. The steps to unroot are in the rooting for dummies thread. From there accepting the OTA is a no-brainer, and rerooting is the same as it was before. That being said, I will never recommend doing that. There is no good reason to update your hboot. You would not be able to restore nandroid backups made before the update, so that means starting over. You can, of course, restore titanium backups, but still. The best way to go is to just flash a custom ROM, then flash the radios. It seems complicated at first, but you really do need to get used to doing things like this. It's all part of having root.
