"google" or "phone" contact when choosing type?

so, if i'm not mistaken, "google" is the preferred type of contact to have since it syncs with your google contacts correct?

I've noticed that the "google" version of my contacts is the one displayed in the screens on my phone(i.e. if the "google" and "phone" have different spellings), which suggests I should stick to google contacts, but I'm confused as to why I have both copies and why should I have to deal with this confusion of having two versions of one contact and which to choose when required to choose when creating a contact, when usually I choose "phone" because it just seems sensible since I'm working on my phone and it is a contact quite related to the phone(right?), but suddenly now when I edit a contact on my phone and choose the "phone" version ....

this issue is so confusing I don't even know what my problem is. Can some please help with this pressure inside my head? Thanks.

I would like to just have a simple single contact for each one. Oh why do people design seemingly simple things so complicated?

Some users don't want certain saved contacts to be synced on their gmail/google accounts, so they designate those as "phone."

That feature is pretty much useless for most, but some will chime in as to how they handle those things.. I just keep them all as "google," as I don't think there is any contact or group that I don't want synced, etc.

Same here, I make them all 'Google' so they will be backed up. That's particularly helpful when flashing a new ROM because all of my contacts automatically sync back to my phone without my having to do anything.

Store them as Google contacts just so you know they'll always be there. I didn't know this the first time I was forced to do a factory reset on my phone... then it automatically restored all of the Google contacts, but all of the Phone contacts which I had entered were all gone forever. Just be safe and make them all Google. There's really no reason not to.

so what is the easiest way to make them all google contacts? I don't even know how I got the google ones. I know one day I somehow imported my contacts from my outlook to my phone and then from my phone to google apparently, but I don't remember how exactly. I guess when I went from my phone to google, it just turned them into google contacts automatically.

Are you saying that all of your contacts are Google, and you have some duplicate phone contacts? Or are some Google and some phone?

If they are the first - you have them all in Google but some duplicate phone contacts - other than manually deleting the phone contacts, probably the quickest way to fix this is:

- from home, settings->applications->manage applications. Wait for the list to refresh
- find "Contacts storage". Tap it, then tap the button "Clear data". This will delete all of your contacts.

At the next Google sync, Google will repopulate your contacts with all of your Google contacts.

actually, now I've found that I have some contacts only as phone ones that I need as google contacts in the first place, which leads me to wonder how any of them got duplicated as google contacts, so I can now turn those phone-only contacts into google -before I go ahead as per your instruction delete all of my phone contacts. Thanks!

Glad I stumbled onto this thread. I know I have some "phone" and some "google" contacts. I'd like to convert them all to "google." How do you convert "phone" contacts into "google" contacts?
