Help Orange SF crashing

PoisonJam

Newbie
I have an Orange SF and it frequently crashes and restarts itself when in use (usually texting). I plan to root the phone sometime but I'm not ready to just yet...

Are there any firmware updates to this phone from Orange? I'm on 2.1-update1. The Orange site is useless for this, I miss the days of having a phone from a proper phone company! Or am I barking up the wrong tree and everything is Android?

I'd also like to back up everything before I start messing around. I see MyBackUp recommended but I'd rather back up to the PC than the phone if possible.

Unlikely, given the low price of the handset to start with. Plus, as screamer said, there's no option to check for and receive system updates, and the only way to get system updates is for Orange to release a system update that includes the ability to update the system, which you can't receive because there's no option to receive system updates....... ;)

I can appreciate the value for money of this handset for sure, but its not been fit for purpose for me. I'm a very light user, in fact the only app I've installed in Facebook, and it's crashing just writing texts.

I might just have to take it back to the Orange shop. I hear the later models use a different screen type - is this better or worse?

I've had one of each, the LED screen is an improvement in touch precision, but neither gave me software issues, I did root and flash with Sebastian404's deoranged rom on both though (which is a very simple process, well detailed over at Modaco).

I know if I root the phone if it ends up being a hardware fault I can't go back to Orange...

I've unlocked it though... if I put my Orange sim back in and took it back to the shop would they ever notice? I was thinking if they give me a replacement phone I would get the newer revision so that's why I was asking about the screen type :)

My wife's phone locked up a couple of times on her. I've rooted it and updated it, removing all of the orange junk. She now says it runs a lot better - no lock ups and the software runs better - Angry birds was a bit hesitant at times, now it runs so smoothly.

Debrand it - I'm sure it will be fine.
