The BIG 2.1 Thread

I'm using the frequency live wallpaper. It's pretty freakin awesome.

It does take a little longer to return to the home screen, but once it's all loaded up, can't tell the difference between live and regular wallpaper.

I've had one random restart, but other than that, it's been nice and stable.

2.1 didnt work out at all for me, even the .41 revision. I reset Data and Cache and installed, but for some reason my phone kept crashing, the app drawer crashed a lot. A lot of random ~4 second lag spikes, and the keyboard fix didn't work for some reason or another. I'll stick to 2.0.1 for a while longer until a more stable release comes out.

You have to format system, data, and cache before installing 2.1, or else you will be dealing with an immense amount of lag and many strange issues that shouldn't be cropping up. Ask me how I know. :)

Next time you are getting ready to install the rom, boot your phone into recovery mode (power + x). Once your recovery screen appears, open an ADB shell from your PC. Type the following:

format SYSTEM:

format CACHE:

format DATA:

once those three things have been done, proceed into the nandroid menu on your phone and finish the install.

That should take care of about 70% of what you are describing happening to you.

And fade you said it was faster. Just homescreens or the phone altogether?

For the most part, the phone as a whole. I do see some lag from time to time when bringing up the phone or if I exit one app and immediately try to open another. I'm sure it will all smooth out soon enough. It's not unbearable the way it is now. not for me at least, and I use my phone a lot. By a lot, I mean I usually kill the battery in about 4-5 hours.

Guys, I just flashed the fixed rev. 4 on to my Droid.

It restored all my apps and settings from before.

The keyboard light is now fixed.

I am tres happy.

That is awesome news! I haven't checked on the progress over there yet. I just barely got home from work.

May be .41. Just loaded it, let it finish recovering and syncing. As of 10 minutes of use, 2 freezes followed immediately by reboots.

And the wallpapers do lag, unfortunately.

Do you have one of the earlier versions? I can do the keyboard/wallpaper fixes myself.

Did you format data, system, and cache? Like I told Sherlock... missing that step might be your whole problem. And if you've installed it correctly and are using the sholes lib files, you shouldn't need the widget. Sure, last I checked the KB issue was still a little buggy, but nothing I can't live with.

Yep, formatted all. Its gotten better, much better, no force resets in an hour or two. Its like each forced reset put off the next one exponentially. Maybe an hour or so...

And I am using rev4, no fixes. And the version says it should be fixed inside, so, unless I'm missing something, still have to use power widget. I'll check if I still need to put in fix though.

First thing I noticed was that the "Nexus" live wallpaper doesn't seem to work in the latest distro of the 2.1 Rom. I hope this gets fixed soon as that was the wallpaper I was hoping to use. The interactive water wallpaper is nice though.

Second thing I noticed was that when you force landscape mode when opening the keyboard on the home screen the 2.1 rom doesn't seem to like that very much. A lot of things are off center and look just plain weird. Also when you return to portrait mode the labels for everything in the app launcher retain their odd skewed-ness. Rebooting returned the labels to their rightful positions.

The new gallery is amazing and feels allot like what we've seen of the upcoming Xperia's UI. Sadly no changes have been made to the music player as of yet. Still waiting on vast improvement in that department.

Last but most certainly not least was the addition of speech recognition to the onscreen keyboards. It's a new feature that utilizes the voice functions of android to pretty much allow you to dictate the body of a message. I found it to be surprisingly accurate when guessing my words and when it screwed up, it was rather easy to try again. Still a very new feature so as of yet there doesn't seem to be a way to teach it any words...cuss words for example come out as #### and you can't teach it things like names and such so far as I know. Still it was a welcome addition.

Overall I'm very pleased with 2.1 despite the few quirks that need ironing out. I think it made it worth rooting, and the system does indeed seem a tad faster. Faster even than 2.0.1. I will definitely be surplanting this ROM with the official 2.1 update when it rolls around but for now, I am content with this cooked goodness.

...and yes bluetooth and gps are both working splendidly.

We have a massive 2.1 catch-all thread you might want to give a peak at. I try my best to keep everyone posted on what is happening with development, and there is a ton of great discussion over there.

And the Nexus wallpaper hasn't worked yet since the port. I know it is bugging a lot of people. I don't really care if it works or not, but it has definitely piqued my curiosity as to why that one won't work when all the rest of them work fine.

Just some food for thought, but if you are already using 2.1, then why go with the official release when it comes? I say this for two reasons... First is the fact that the official release will kill your root. Until someone figures out how to root again, that would be that. Second, by the time the official release comes out, I am sure the people who are working on the ROMs now will either have this one running 100%, or they will be stripping the official release to patch the bugs with. In either event, in my eyes anyway, it would make using the official ota pointless. :)

edit: Ninja Merge!! lol.

Hi everybody. I just put 2.1 on my Droid yesterday, and so far so good! I love the animated wallpaper (I tried the green smoke for a while, and now I'm on the interactive gentle water).

2 things:

1. Have you noticed a bit of a lag when using the animated wallpaper? I did with the green smoke, namely, my app menu wouldn't come up as fast. Once I went to a stock wallpaper it was much faster. For some reason, though, i don't notice as much of a lag on the water one. . .

2. Is there anything similar to Root Explorer I can download? I want to change my boot animation (the android peeing on the apple icon is a bit too vulgar for my taste) but the Root Explorer in the market says that it doesn't work on 2.1 and the dev won't fix it till after the Xmas "holidays", whether that means tomorrow or after the 1st, I don't know.

Is there anything similar I can do? I can't access the system folder otherwise. Unless, can I do it from the adb shell on my computer? I'm new at rooting, but I really want to change that stinking boot animation!

I'm the sort of person who takes my own words to mean several things at once and expect others to do the same. So when I say I'll update to the official, I mean I'll take what is most complete and works best for me. However you are right in saying they will have this fixed of most major bugs by that time and when that happens I will most likely take that over the ota...unless they decide to keep that ridiculous peeing android boot loader. I prefer the original droid loader or even the nexus ones' loader...a silly reason to base my decision on, but I'm one of those people who cares about graphics at every turn...so, yeah.

Is that just me?

Nope. See my post a few above. I hate that disgusting peeing Droid. I got the Nexus one on there for now. Easy on the eyes.

I fear that the OP was being totally sincere. Yikes! Form over function wins again. Americans are ... are ... so ... err ... never mind.

I'm getting pretty fed up with all the stereotypical blanketed Anti-American posts that run rampant on the Internet. Do you know me? Do you live in my country? Do you subscribe to American ideals that you yourself may not even be aware of? Quit applying the stereotypes of other countries to the boards. This is a technology forum people, not a place for you to spout what you think you know about other nationalities.

*EDIT* I see you are living in Ohio. None the less, my sentiments stand. At the very least you are helping to further propetuate stereotypes about Americans when you yourself are one. Way to go.

Keyboard backlight works, GPS works, BT works....only problem I ever have is landscape mode on the homescreen but I rarely use that. You do a lot though right? I know you have said you don't like either dock modes so you prefer the homescreen over it when docked? That might be troubling for you.

Anyone, how is POP3 handling in 2.1? Are all or any of the bugs addressed?

Pop3 and exchange support still sux. I can see where googles priorities are. Hey, my email doesn't work but I have a new cool unlock screen and some live wallpapers that bog down my phone.

Sorry. This is a sensative subject for me coming from a winmo phone.

Yes, it is a silly reason. Do you realize how easy it is to fix that? Toss the bootanimation.zip file you like into your sdk, open a command line and type "adb push bootanimation.zip /data/local". BAM... done. There is no way I would ever base my decision solely on something so easy to fix. ;)

HEY!!! Don't belittle my people! :D

what is the latest current realease? and how would you compared it to 2.0.1? worth it?

Beauty is all in the eyes of the beholder. If you want stable, then no... it isn't worth it. If you want something new and shiny that will cause your phone to reboot at least once a day and not always work like it should, then yes, it is an awesome ROM.

Personally, I love it. I'd be lying if I didn't say it was frustrating, though.

Current release is V04, although it isn't the best one to have. Ideally, you know what you are doing and can patch it yourself. Self-patched V1 seems to be the most stable so far. They are still hard at work, though.

thanks for the help! i think for the time being ill stay on 2.0.1 because i do not want to ruin my droid! Am at at risk of that? and also if you dont mind could you tell me how to backup my phone so i can restore if anything goes wrong?

At least for a few more days anyway. ;) I keep having to smack the lil devil on my left shoulder telling me to "just do it". But I figure the longer I wait, the better the ROM will be that I finally do install. Right?
