Root just want to say hello

Yes i like status bar customisation can u change battery colour ect i defo need help with bat it goes from 100% to 20% between 6am and 3pm using for surfing net for an hour 10 mins music check facebook now an again is that normal

Your phome is new so it shouly take 4 or 5 charge discharge cycles for the battery to settle. I cant say whether that's normal but rooting will certainly improve it.

You can build your own flashable status bar customisations at UOT Kitchen - change battery style, colour, whatever. They have a range of pre-made custom batteries, or you can mix your own.

But don't try it with the stock ROM, unless you want to find out what a "bootloop" is - I speak from experience here! Pick a custom ROM that you like, then play with stuff like that. But you can visit the site and see what options are there - just don't try to download and flash anything.

And first things first: take a nandroid backup before you flash anything - ROMs, themes or anything else. Because if your flash goes wrong the nandroid is your lifeline.

Re. battery life, that's going down quicker than I'd have guessed from what you describe, but there are a lot of other variables that affect battery life (coverage is a biggie - if the phone is constantly switching between 3G and 2G that will drain a lot).

Most custom ROMs come with undervolted kernels, or if not such kernels can be installed separately, which is one way of saving power. Another is to install SetCPU and set up just one "profile", to lock your cpu frequency low when the screen is off (e.g. min = 245, max = 245 seems to work for many people).

If you've already flashed CM6.1.1 I guess the question is "did it affect signal strength?" - if you've not seen any loss of signal, then no problem. I assume you had Froyo (2.2) beforehands, in which case your radio firmware should be fine (with an older radio the camera won't work).

There are a lot of variables affecting radio performance. Although I've not seen such an effect myself, many people do report that some radio firmwares perform better with some ROMs, in which case logically changing ROM might also affect radio performance. But my advice would be not to look for problems - let things run for a few days and see how it goes, and if it's all working OK then forget about it.

well....i was running USCC 2.1....not Froyo...I am running Froyo now with the Cyanogen ROM 6.1.1 it seems that signal strength may be worse, however i can't really tell because i am in a poor signal location..just seems worse then what it did before.......another question is Cyanogen 6.1.1 the best ROM out there for CDMA?? I want something that helps with the battery also......!!!

i used revoked to root and cyanogen 6.1.1 rom.....can this hurt ur signal strength? i cant see how it could but please let me know....

Im running CM 6.1, when I flashed the kernel in my sigi, in fact both of the Christmas Vork releases I saw a marked improvement in internet access, and data speed.

How is the battery life with the Kernel? or does that even matter?? Also, if i wanted that Kernel exactly how do i get it on my phone? I am a newb to this...But i am learning....just wanna make sure i do it correctly.....and is the benefit to changing the Kernel?

Don't know CDMA very well, as we don't have it in Europe. But looking at the Vork kernel thread in XDA ([KERNEL-2.6.37]vorkKernel-BFS/CFS-BFQ-AXI-SVS/HAVS-OC/UV[03-Jan-11] - xda-developers) the first post contains a link to a compile script for CDMA, which strongly implies that there are differences between GSM and CDMA kernels, so you should be careful not to flash a GSM one.

On a similar topic, don't be tempted to flash a different radio firmware unless you are absolutely sure it is CDMA - every radio I've seen in the XDA desire android development forum is GSM, and flashing one of those will brick your phone.

Hadron makes a good point, I should read threads more clearly. I do know the internet is quicker with this kernel, but I use Set CPU to clip the processor to 384Mhz max when the screen is off (which saves heaps of battery) so I couldn't really say.

After you have found the correct kernel for your phone, flash the kernel in the same way that you do a rom but flash it after the rom, otherwise it'll just get overwritten by the kernel in the rom .zip.

i may try it out....i have set cpu but does the kernel actually give u more options to change speeds when the screen is off and such??? like i said i am new to this.....i hate being new...lol....

i do not believe i will mess with radio....i'm still trying to figure out what all custom kernels do vs stock ones....

Some do - mostly different degrees of overclocking.

Also different kernels may use different voltage tables. Lower voltage = lower power usage, but not all phones are equal in their tolerances, so some kernels are not stable on some phones. Unfortunately there's only one way to find out, which is to try and see what works for you.

Lol my post has been jakd ok im guna root today will i loose all my contacts ect? I hav a bakup on my pc but anything else i shood save?

Rooting itself doesnt lose any data. It just flashed custom recovery and adds the superuser app to your OS.

Its flashing custom roms that is different story.

But one step at a time. You can back up data using titanium once rooted.

TIP. if you used any of the tricks to force apps to SD card, rooting will fail. You need to undo this first.

Cheers i wana use a gingerbread rom i no this is offtopic but wood u swap ur desire for a dhd givin the chance as i hav that oportunity

too big for me and havent read up on the root scene for it really. desire has a huge dev community. not sure about hd

For battery saving you can install SetCPU and set up a "screen off" profile (to keep the clock speed low when screen is off - I normally use min = max = 245). This can be done with any ROM - all you need is root.

Another is an undervolted kernel. Many custom ROMs come with one of these, so this won't narrow your ROM choice too much either, and there are other kernels which can be flashed as alternatives. Different phones have different voltage tolerances, so not all phones can use all kernels. Best bet might be to pick a ROM that comes with an undervolted kernel (abbreviation "UVOC", for "under volt, over clock" is often used) and see how you get on with it before experimenting with alternatives. If you start experimenting, remember that you need different kernels for Sense and AOSP ROMs (and GSM and CDMA, but that's true for ROMs also).

Nandroid before flashing anything, of course.

I have titanuim backup is this just like nandroid? I take my phn gsm as it has sim what sense roms are good leedroid really wana get a good custom look like custom status bar ect

Titanium and nandroid are different things. Ti backs up apps and settings to SD, but does not back up the ROM or kernel. So Ti allows you to recover data if you have to wipe the phone (necessary for many ROM changes), but if you flash the wrong thing and can't boot the phone Titanium can't help.

A nandroid is a backup you make from recovery. Boot into recovery (boot while holding the volume down button, then follow instructions on bootloader screen to select recovery). Then select "backup/restore" (can use trackpad for this), then backup. This backs up everything apart from the radio - rom, kernel, apps, settings, data - and if you then restore from it it puts your phone back exactly like it was when you took the backup. Great if you decide you just don't like some mod and want to revert, or if you mess the phone up and can't even boot up. However, you can't use it to selectively restore just some apps or data, or to restore data to a new ROM - restoring a nandroid just rewinds to where you were when you made it. Both are important, but they are for different purposes.

LeeDroid is a good custom Sense ROM. The version with A2SD is themeable, but the version without is not (or wasn't last time I looked), so if you want to use LeeDroid and theme it you need to create an ext partition on your card first - see Dan's A2SD FAQ. You may as well do this anyway, as you'll probably end up wanting A2SD sooner or later.
