got g tablet - now what?

hi guys - so i finally jumped in and bought a g tablet - i hope its in shipping right now - so expecting it with in the next few days...

i know rooting is absolutely essential - but what else?
--what rom do you recommend?... vegan, tnt lite (why?)

any apps?...widgets?...launcher screen?...

if you guys can post some pics of your tablet's home screen(or all screens - don't limit your self) and what you use that would be very helpful as well

other then that just any other tips...tricks i should know about?

---thanks---

rooting info is here:

http://androidforums.com/gtablet-al...stall-custom-rom-fix-market-update-flash.html

that thread also contains links for Z4root, Flash, Titanium Backup, and ClockworkMod which you will need for various steps.

as far as ROM choice goes, it is all a matter of personal preference. I like VEGAn because it is closer to the stock android experience i am accustomed to, but mainly because it gives you the ability to use alternate keyboards (Gingerbread, Swype, etc.). TnT lite is also a great choice if you like the stock viewsonic Tap'N'Tap interface.

homescreens are difficult to post with the G-tab as none of the screen capture apps work, but if you want custom wallpapers, you will need to use multipicture live in order to prevent strange cropping issues. as far as a homescreen replacement goes, LauncherPro and ADW are both excellent choices for free... if you are going to pay, go with ADW EX. the screen transitions it offers combined with multipicture live are awesome.

thanks for the tips and response solid...any app ideas?...
i need:
-ebook reader - novels ect
-ebook reader where i can make some quick notes (textbooks)

-I use Dolphin HD for my browser. Flash is great on the gtablet. It's very smooth when watching videos and games.
-For Ebook reading, besides the Nook and Kindle apps, I use Laputa. There's a lot of good books you can download.
-Rock player is nice on the gtablet.
-If you are a gamer and love emulators...I think this is where the gtablet shows off it's power. Tigermame, Snesnoid, Nesoid, etc coupled with wiimote is great on it's 10inch screen.
-For video chat- I use Yahoo messenger with the vid chat add-on. I heard Skype is coming so make sure to keep an eye on that.
-Google voice for texting. Works great!

Honestly, I haven't seen many apps that didn't work on the gtablet.

will the samsung galaxy tab apps work for the g tablet?...

i figure after you root the viewsonic bundled apps that come with it will be gone?...anything i will miss out on?

I don't even remember what stock apps came with the gtab. :p
Some of the apps from the galaxy tab have been ported like I think zinio. And I think the email client. Head over to XDA.

this is a noob question - but can the home screens rotate as well? (landscape and portrait views?) - same for the browser, and file explorer and other apps?

Yep :)

Daughter uses it in landscape for web browsing/facebook all the time.

EDIT: DUH - Landscape is default! Had a Gulf War moment there...

The homescreens do NOT rotate to portrait but browser, file manager, YouTube etc do.

even with like ADW or launcher pro no home screen rotation?
its the same way on the droid x i used so i hope its not a problem...

You know, I have ADW EX and my homescreens rotate and if I remember correctly even my LP had auto rotation.

my homescreen has always rotated... i turned the option off in settings because i have 0 desire to use it in portrait, but the default is definitely to auto-rotate. this is true with both LauncherPro and ADW EX, at least while running VEGAn.

Not all apps rotate, like Angry birds can only play where the camera is right side up. The flash player when in full screen mode does not rotate when viewing flash content from the web. I believe the 360 degree rotation was enabled when they fixed the G-sensor issue for games. I hardly use my gtablet on portrait mode but I do turn my g-tablet upside down sometimes to get a better viewing angle when I want to read text while my G-tablet is laying down.

oh ok - thanks for clearing that up guys...
i do plan on using it in portrait views for reading ebooks (might be a bit too large/long in that position) -
---how is the g tablet as an ebook reader? - i know people were complaining about the viewing angle

The viewing angle in portrait a little strange. I have to hold mine at a 2-3

Sorry wrong forum. As far as I know, full root is not available for the galaxy tab. This is the viewsonic gtablet forum.

Just picked up my GTab from Sears, I'm in Burbank,CA. I have a Samsung Tab at the moment also. Make my comparison, have about 30 days, one will go back. I jumped on the Gtab cause it said Window7 home premium on the Sears ad, not a big gamer want to utilize like a netbook.

Where do I start to root for a non-techie. I've rooted a NOOKcolor with the auto-nooter from xda, it was all quite by accident and scared the "s**t" out of me. I returned the NC cause I got SamTab for $399, no contract from Costco (actually, one month then drop!) go with wi-fi.

Any and all help appreciated to root the Gtab.

Thanks!:)

I'm new to this forum and the Gtab. I just got mine from Sears tonight and trying to root. I had a NookColor and couldn't get it going either. Figuring I'm jinxed or something. I'm not a techiem, but beginning to catch some of the lingo. I downloaded the exroot, sideloaded, click on esexplorer, tried to open...wouldn't parse. What does that mean besides, no load?
I really want to get this thing going, i like the screen size, I also have a Samsung Tab and it's been seamless, but would like a larger screen. One of these will go back in the next couple of weeks. I posted on another thread also, the Sears online description said Windows7 was on the Gtab is that true?
All help, responses will be utilized, I want to ues this like a netbook, Thanks.

Well you're in luck! If you know how to sideload, you're almost halway done with installing a custom rom.:D.

Go to your other thread where you posted and all the instructions are laid out for you...everything you need is over in that thread.

Trying to remember my other thread, I purportedly have dwnld clockwork and ezroot, when I boot with power and +, the recovery signal comes up in the upper left, and the kernel line next, but nothing changes anywhere else? The volume buttons only show volume. Something obviously didn't load any suggestions. Also, when I hook up miniusb to my laptop, it never reads, my laptop always says insert disk.

Your thoughts please. Thanks

Ok, I see that you're using three threads to ask your questions so let's keep the questions on this thread so you can refer to our answers in one place. I know it can be confusing so we'll try to help and us answering your questions in three different threads might not help you. :p
