Help Switch off Web/Data connect?

Hi,

I'm new here. I'm 48 and a database software developer and trying to get to grips with my first Andriod/smart phone. It's a funny old world.

Can I stop the Galaxy Europa (i5500) from connecting to the internet? I keep seeing the 'H' icon when I'm doing nothing (and I've killed all my apps and running services). I want a wifi capable phone, but I don't want it to connect at any other time unless I'm sending or receiving calls/messages.

Can I have any control over this? I could end up paying a fortune.

Thanks. can't find APNoid. Is APNdroid the same? Seems to offer the same thing.

That's the one, APNdroid you can add it to your home screen as a wiget, when its red its working (not connected) when its green its connected. Its a good app to have.
