Sprint makes Premium Data changes from Jan 30, 2011

They should just raise all base plans. Atleast then my copy discount would help with the increase.

That's why it was done this way. I'm pretty sure there are so many people on some type of discounted plan that the only way to get the full $10 is via the non-discounted surcharge.

Wonder how the "premium data experience" is going to go over for people who really aren't getting anything but an increase.

This makes buying an non-4G phone almost something that can't/shouldn't be considered. Wonder how that's going to impact sales on phones that aren't high-end/expensive? I imagine it's not the best thing for anyone who just wants a low-priced 3G smartphone.

That sucks............when we have to update phones on the family plan there goes $30 more. Should have stuck with AT&T or went to Vzw......

so...

is this in addition to the current $10/fee that 4G phones have? so then it is a total of $20 a month?

or...

is it only affecting the non-4G smartphones?? so now.. all smartphone have the SAME $10/ monthly fee.

All smartphones now have the $10

The new Sprint ads are going to emphasize "unlimited" which is really what they mean by premium even if a small percentage of subscribers currently use a high amount of data. At 3G, there's a disincentive to be an extreme data consumer just because of the time.

How about rebranding all the plans as "Simply $10 More"?

From Jan 30, 2011, for all new smartphone activations, Everything Data plans will be:
$69.99 - eligible discounts + $10

If you are already on a plan with 4G phones, this change will not affect you.

thanks for all the price confirmations...

it would be a lot less confusing for all ... it they just change the pricing plan:
dumb phone : $69.99
Smart phone: $79.99

the add fee(s) .. just gives most a bad taste in their mouth.
simply everything plan... pick the phone and that is the price of that plan.
you get less bitchin from the public. we are all accustom to price increase to inflation. we all hate extra fees.

It was going to happen, there are more then enough people here that say "wow, I am going to tether my phone, and use it for my home internet connection!!!!!" But princes will rise, regardless of what you do. So either swallow the fee, or move on. For only 20 dollars more a month you can go with verizon.

Verizon fees are going to go up again shortly..

With Sprint making these 2 changes, the 10 buck 3g premium charge and also dropping the yearly upgrade makes you wonder what they have to offer on Feb 7 huh?

Exactly what I was thinking. By doing this will let people out of there contracts right? 3 days before the Verizon iPhone is being released?! They are either the dumbest carrier on the planet or they are announcing the Sprint iPhone on Feb 7th.

The change will not let you out of contract.. You are grandfathered in unless you make a change and accept a new contract and the new fee..

I do however think the Iphone for Sprint is on its way..

iphone for sprint??? maybe in summer... when the newest iphone 5 will be released.

sprint's cheaper unlimited plan with the new iphone...
and the release of the next EVO 2...

that would shake things up!

Still cheaper if you want to have unlimited everything. I only use a few hundred texts, and a GB or two of data per month, so I might be better off on Verizon or T-mobile or other carriers, especially if I want a better phone selection and more plan options...

and if you all the sudden find yourself.. needing to use a lot of data.. or calls... or texts... for a few months out of the year? i like the idea.... I dont have to even think about it.

I've had my current Sprint account for over 5 years, I have never gone over my minutes / texts / data, not even come close. While it's great to have peace of mind (keep in mind I voluntarily pay the $10 4G fee!), these changes are getting harder and harder to bear. I have fewer and fewer incentives to stay with Sprint versus looking at another carrier now.

I would agree with this statement as well, being a Sprint customer for over 10 years. While I know that we all have choices, the clear choice for me has been Sprint over that time. It seems as though now that "clear choice" is being reduced to "its just convenient to stay" and with 5 phones on my plan (soon to be 6), it might be time to look around. I would love to see some sort of comparison chart once this change hits. I will say, though, that the mobile to mobile is a pretty big deal these days. I hardly ever call a landline.

Well if it is an iphone, then you can thank apple for losing upgrades and increased fees. Of course only sprint will trip over itself to be the last in line for something. Oh yea, we get a phone that will ruin our upgrades and cost us more, that I will never use, and is 3 years behind the curve right now. Go peer-pressure!

I thought you already left, you do nothing but complain how sprint is not for you, move on already. Here is a hint, sprint is not that into you, sprint said like, not love. Sprint is just slowing you down. Get out there and catch your self a real man/women/thing. It will be better if you ended it now, I hear sprint can get pretty needy if you date them too long. (That is what all the young people say to each other right?) ;). And to the guy that has 6 phones, you are not going to get need sprint for 6 phones, not even close. You would be well over 300 bucks if you tried that with verizon. It would be like, 200 with sprint. 29.99 per phone for just data with Verizon compared to 9.99 with sprint.

^^^ I think I heard.. verizon just started that too... any mobile to mobile free too

If that's true...could be time to jump ship. Again, though, I would like to see one of those comparison charts. Getting hard to keep up with all of the changes / fees / add ons of all of these cell phone companies.

I just hope for Sprints sake what ever they do on Feb 7 and moving forwarding they begin to wow their customers..

I am happy with them and the changes do not really bother me.. The only two things I want is expanded 4g coverage and a few new toys to play with.
