Root Voodoo5 newbie, couple of quick questions...

I was under the impression that CWM should be red when once a voodoo kernel is installed, but this is not the case for me. Is this normal?

Apologies in advance if this should have gone in the troubleshooting section.

how did you go about getting to CWM? if you did it from rom manager or the shutdown menu, i think it goes into green

try doing a manual recovery with the phone off, hold down both vol buttons, hold power button, samsung logo pops up, let go of power button

No need to do a recovery that I can tell... got the robotic voices during the first reboot and now am back in my existing DJ05 ROM. SetCPU confirms that I am indeed running imnuts' kernel, so...

i dont mean to do a recovery >< lol i meant doing a manual boot into CWM - if you have voodoo5 on, then the manual CW should be red

So flashing the voodoo kernel is what enables CWMred, yes? Disabling lagfix in red and flashing back to a non-voodoo kernel disappeared cwmred for me. I also note that voodoo5 kernels can be used without the lagfix applied... is there any benefit to this, or is the whole purpose of the voodoo kernels simply to enable the lagfix?

Must I now flash any ROMs, themes, mods, etc. that I download via CWMred? Must backups be made and restored via red, or can I still use ROM Manager?

Flashing a voodoo5 kernal enables CW red - yes. Flashing back to that non-voodoo kernal does remove CW red, so no worries there.

I'm not really sure about the disabled voodoo, but I'm going to assume that the lagfix is one of the main things that makes voodoo5 faster. I suppose keeping voodoo5 on without a lagfix just makes it a non-voodoo lol.

As for as flashing Roms/themes/etc, I'm not 100% sure.

The rule of thumb = if you are on voodoo5, make your backups and do your restores via CW red and not ROM Manager. Rom manager reboots into CW green.

I'll let others chime in on my accuracy =D

If you are using the red voodoo recovery it is possible to flash themes through rom manager and green recovery....kernels and roms should be done through red. (Rom manager is more of a pita than an assett on our phones imo)

The major thing with red recovery is to not try and restore backups you made in green recovery in red and vice versa...you. *might* be ok but odds are you ll run into issues....really most of us once we get red use it as our default recovery.

Really the disabling lagfix features in recovery are there just to disable voodoo so you can flash nonvoodoo....while you could run a voodoo kernel with voodoo.disabled....its kinda pointless

The lagfix is essentially the only thing separating rfs and ext4 (voodoo) kernels

Don't look.at it so much as a lagfix though....but as a filesystem conversion. Rfs does not handle system write speeds well....ext4 is far better at it. So if you do a lot of web browsing, gaming, and download a lot of stuff than you would notice the.changes more

oh I do notice the difference, just wanted to be sure I dont't screw anything up now that it's working.

When flashing new ROMs via CW red, will the file system remain ext4 or must I do something to re convert after each flash?

if you have flashed a voodoo5 kernel and dont touch any of the settings, you can go on and flash roms/themes/mods, other voodoo5 kernels as often as you want. unless you have to go to a nonvoodoo kernel for some reason your fine

Great! That seemed like the common sense answer, but I didn't want to assume anything :)

I have to say, the difference is definitely tangible, especially when browsing the market and (oddly) using the Chess.com app, among other things.
