Help Syncing contacts to Gmail

Hi, can someone please explain an easy way to sync all my phone/sim contacts to my gmail account? I don't need to sync Facebook or anything like that, just my People to my gmail email account so I've always got them as a back up.

Go to menu > settings >accounts and sync> if its not already there in the list choose add account and add google and fill your details when prompted.

Thank yeah that's already there and set up. So if I hit sync then it will def only sync out from my phone to gmail, and not the other way right? I just want to make sure as I dont want to lose my contacts just as I'm trying to back them up.

then press google account to open and choose, sync contacts,sync now.:D
 
Ok just done as indicated in the post above, followed the instructions ok, on my phone it shows Sync Contacts was done today Tuesday 25 Jan 2011 at 19.30 but none of the contacts are in my gmail email account on my laptop. Does it take some time or should it be immediate? Or have I done something wrong :confused:
 
i must admit it took a while for them to show,i tried one contact,a few times to get it to show, then all of a sudden it was there three times.
 
sorry just read post again, i've given you instructions to sync from gmail.:rolleyes:
try....people, menu,import/export, import from sim card,create contact under account/google,menu,select all, save.

firstly do steps in last post to import contacts to google, then do the sync. after sync completed contacts will be in google contacts,
i have just tried and am now seeing multiple contacts( already synced before. but new contacts i only entered today are now in google:D
sorry for the stuff around, but all solved now:)
 
Top stuff Eph, that has all worked perfectly, all my contacts safely backed up on to my Gmail :D

my pleasure mate:D glad it worked out. and if you ever sync again and get multiples like i did there is a multiple contact merge function in google contact site, worked a treat.
 
Hi, I have a similar problem with my froyo. None of the above seems to really be of use. I have synched contacts, but can't work out how to turn my phone contacts into google ones on my phone. I want them all to be in gmail so I can sort them out.
Any ideas how to easily get the phone ones marked as google?

Hi Dixie03,

I did what Ephbee suggested in post 8.
Step 1 - export the phone contacts to the SD card.
Step 2 - import from SD to GMail/Googlemail.

All my contacts are now in google
