Root what is all this "rooting" and "froyo" talk?

Apparently everybody but me knows what these terms mean but not i. Thanks

I dont know what the techical description for rooting should sound like but for idiots like myself its decoding anti tampering computer coding put in place by verizon and or HTC so that your phone can then be reprogrammed to do all kinds of things verizon/HTC probably dont want you to do...at your own risk (such as installing froyo, overclocking the CPU speed, adding live wallpapers to an Eris ect... its a long list of things that can be done to rooted phones to make them run faster or add more functions). the closest analogy I can think of are car tuners who reprogram factory ECU's for more performance. Factory ECU all have advanced security coding to prevent tampering for obvious warranty, longevity and refinement standards. Once tuners crack these codes (usually only with help from factory leaks at this stage) the tuners can reprogram and re flash the factory ECUs for more peformance/features ect (common practice on late model turbo VWs since I happen to own and have done so) OR done wrong they can royally screw your engine up, same as a rooted phone reprogrammed wrong or incorrectly. luckily we have this forum and here HTC Droid Eris - xda-developers / [READ FIRST] Eris Roll-up Thread - xda-developers with good developers on the job (well for free for the love of God!) to make sure that doesn't happen.

froyo is just a version of the android operating system. Android names all their versions of their operating systems desserts for whatever reason. Android 2.1 aka eclair, Android 2.2 aka froyo, android 2.3 aka gingerbread and after that the next one is going to be named honeycone (Android 2.4 I suppose)... A unrooted eris is stuck with android 2.1 since thats what verizon chose to update and stick us with but froyo (obviously newer version of android) can be installed once rooted by flashing one of the MANY available froyo roms done for the eris. Or you can install hopped up 2.1 roms which many believe peform better than 2.2 froyo roms. Most all agree either option is better than what verizon sticks us with.

That explanation helped me also.

But is it really that much better?
I have heard like nonsensikal 16.1 and some others are snappier. But is just the standard HTC approved Eclair that sluggish?

Also, would the HTC approved Eclair version be more stable than any of these unrooted roms? Would it be less buggy since HTC has tested it and such?

I wouldn't want to chance installing a rom that is going to be faster but also buggier. Unless of course the official Eclair release is just as buggy but slower.

It will depend on the ROM you choose. The Froyo ROMs, while very stable at this point, are still less stable than anything 2.1. There are some great 2.1 ROMs (xtrROM and xtrSense) that have the benefits of HTC Sense without all the lag and bloatware. Both are much faster than stock 2.1 and I've never heard of someone having a problem with stability on either of those ROMs. If you just want a stable, fast ROM you don't have to worry about at all and don't care if you have Froyo or Eclair, I'd suggest either of the xtr ROMs I mentioned before.

Right, there are several ROMs that are exactly Eris Sense 2.1 (or extremely close) that just have all of the power that rooting the phone gives you (namely, removing bloatware apps, overclocking the phone while you use it, to work faster, while underclocking while it is idle to save battery). xtrSENSE, PlainJane - there are others, but running these it would be difficult to find what is different, apart from the loss of laggy operation.

Especially if your Eris is past warranty (older than one year), there seems little reason to stay stock. I have run my Eris with a rooted ROM since May of last year - just after the stock 2.1 was delivered, when it was clear that there were issues with it - and would never go back to stock.

Good info. Thanks!

It'll probably be a little while before I am ready to root my phone.
I definitely see the benefits now more clearly.

I probably would go with something like xtrSense from what you are saying. Because I love the layout of the phone now, and the only complaint I have is the laggyness. And honestly it's not even a major complaint because it's less laggy than the phone I came from (LG Chocolate Touch.)

And considering how much more it is doing (crap, it's practically a handheld computer far more capable than the first coulple of desktop computers I owned back in the day, 486dx anyone?). It is amazing that it runs as quickly as it does. I was browsing through my mp3's on my SD card ( I have about 3,500 or so ) and it was smooth as silk. Same for browsing my pictures.

A couple of times after I take it off the charger it's real laggy for a minute, then it gets better.

Also I have like 3 alarms set, because I like to wake up in stages. :)
And it worked perfectly yesterday, but today none of them went off. Fortunately the baby started crying about the time I needed to get up or I would've been late for work. Any reason why the alarms would work one day and not the next? I double-checked and they are all turned on, and set for "M, T, W, Th, F". I though maybe it was just lagged up.
