Root ROM Recommendations

diS

Android Enthusiast
Hey Guys

I'm running LeeDroid for a few weeks now and I was thinking about changing ROMS.

What I'm looking for is a Stable, Fast and responsive ROM.
No need for Sense but I do need A2SD+

I was thinking about Defrost, Oxygen or GingerVillain.
Thoughts are much appreciated!
Personal experience is also appreciated!

When I first chose a ROM I went for LeeDroid over Defrost for the simple reason that I didn't want to flash the radio. I'm a bit frightend about it ruining everything. So advice on flashing the radio safely would be nice :)

Thanks in advance
diS

Firstly, what radio are you using? As long as it's a Froyo radio (_5.whatever) you should be OK without an update. It's only people with 2.1 radios who needed to update to get a working camera.

I really like defrost 6.1. faster than leedroid [also ran leedroid for a couple of months], near enough as stable and more tweaking available

I guess my radio is 32.49.00.32U_5.11.02.27

I'm going to wait and see what others say and I'll then make up my mind.

Same one I'm using - works fine with DF, GV and Oxygen (though I only ran Oxygen 2.0 for less than an hour. Just ran it for curiosity - didn't find anything wrong with it in that time, but also didn't find a reason to change).

As Rowlers has said, DF is very stable and refined after a lot of development, and has enough users that most quirks you might encounter are known by someone. It's fast, and I was using it as my main ROM until last week - would recommend it strongly. GV is by the same dev - it's a lot newer, doesn't have all of the tweaks yet, but does have some little touches which come from it being 2.3, and of course is still developing. I find GV quite stable enough to use as my normal ROM rather than something experimental, though I'm looking forward to seeing where it (or "DeFroST 7") goes to.

Why are you thinking of changing? I've flashed several ROMs and in the end returned to LeeDroid because everything just works. No embarrassment at the office party because you forgot that firing up the camera crashes your phone, or getting lost because the GPS integration in Maps is broken.

Gingerbread doesn't bring anything important to the table for our phones as it stands (the keyboard is available elsewhere, our Desires don't do near-field communication, battery tweaks are questionable when you have the option of changing radios, playing with SetCPU or under-volting).

The most significant changes to how my phone feels and operates came from installing LauncherPro and WidgetLocker and playing with the Ultimate Online Theme Kitchen. Performance benefits, tons of customisation, nicer widgets and icons. Really, once you get used to how a certain flavour of Android runs, be it straight/AOSP or Sense, you run into its limitations and cross-flashing gets a bit samey.

Although I do understand the urge to try things out, in which case I say give Oxygen or DeFrost a try. But seriously. LauncherPro.

Used Defrost until Gingerbread.

Using Oxygen until Gingerbread Defrost is released.

If you want stability and don't care for 2.3, go with Defrost.

Also, I've never had an issue with flashing radios. From what I understand, the only issue is if it is interrupted. They are very small though and quick to flash, so there is little opportunity to mess it up.

I think that those of us who have working phones have generally not had problems flashing radios ;)

Seriously, the main thing to know is that the actual flash is short, but then there's an install stage when you reboot, and after that the boot appears to restart (i.e. you get the vibrate + splash screen, and then that happens a second time - I think it's only twice, but it's been a couple of months since I last did this). I reckon the biggest risk (*) is that somebody who doesn't know what to expect might assume that something has gone wrong and interrupt it when these things happen.

(*) If you have a GSM phone. The biggest risk for CDMA owners is not realising that all of the radios in the XDA thread are for GSM phones only.

I had leedroid for a while but decided recently to go for ginger villain. Had a few issues getting it to work but discovered it was basically my fault for restoring wrongly from titanium (thanks Dan).

Since then I've had no issues, its very stable, everything works and it seems pretty lean and quick.

Moved away from sense (launcher pro) so in the end I decided to drop it altogether - why run a sense ROM if you're not using sense? Also there's lots of extra customisation in gv.

Try it and see - if you've backed up its easy to go back if its not for you.

I'm changing because I want to try something else and to see wheter there are more stable and faster ROMS available.

I'm allready using LauncherPro PLUS and WidgetLocker.

@ Jammy & Hadron: Thanks for the advice guys, really appreciate it!

I tried Leedroid 2.3d for a while , liked it a lot but found the battery life just terrible
after I flashed 5.11.05.27 radio
Running Oxygen 2.0 now with Zeam launcher
Find it it really quick and pretty stable , hasnt rebooted on me ever or given me any probs
Battery life is much better , I did flash back to 5.09.05.30_2 radio however
One thing though is that Video recording does not work with this rom
I live without it so far

I switched to Ginger Villain after a few months of using an originally stock rooted ROM that I had customised to my liking (via UOT kitchen et al). I basically wasn't using much of Sense and I wanted to find out how the AOSP side of things was. I'm not going back...

As others have said, if you don't fancy the additions/features GB brings, then perhaps stick with DeFrost, else try out Ginger Villain.
