Long time Linux user here and have been wanting an droid OS phone for a while. Finally got to get my hands on a Eris last week (had to wait for contract renew date) and I am hooked. Way better than I thought it would and all the apps you can get for it. 
Have a friend that has the I-Phone and we compared devices/speed/apps/customizing and he is even thinking about making the switch. Haven't check if the Eris will support the newer version of droid but would be nice if they offered a upgrade for it in the future.
