Sick of Dictionary

This dictionary is ridiculous. I wish there was a way to permanently delete words. I mistype babe and I get 'bane'. I mistype 'ou' for you and I get 'ii'? Huh? Doesn't that look like 'you', Incredible? Instead of like I get "Luke"? What? I want a way to permanently delete words I will NEVER use.

I feel you I use to get the same problem and it annoyed the crap out of me. Also I hate when you want to use a certain word but you don't want it to save but it does anyway lol. So just like you, I wanted to figure out a way to edit the phones dictionary of all my saved words and I'm happy to say that you can. All you have to do is go to your phones settings and do it from there I'll try my best to give you a step by step guide. You go to the menu from your homescreen then settings go all the way down to Language & Keyboard a new set of options will pop up from there choose TOUCH input. Another set of options will appear go all the way down and user dictionary (it will be the last option for you to choose). Clicking user dictionary will bring up all the words that you have saved over time, you can click on them and edit them if you want to. In order to delete them you have to click on the word and when the edit screen pops up just delete the whole word and press okay and the phone should say "Word successfully deleted" so yeah I hope that helps peace and stay up.
 
what about for words that are in the dictionary that is set on the phone. anyway to delete those? i think what incredibleguy is referring to is the words that are preloaded into the dictionary on the phone. i have run into the same problems before and it does get annoying sometimes. i feel the dictionary doesnt favor words that are used more often than others, such as you, like, and other words like that.

anyone got any ideas for that?

Yes this is exactly what I mean. The words in the phone dictionary, not mine. It gives me LUKE over LIKE? When I'm close? Try typing 'ou' looks what coms up. ii. I spend more time correcting the autocorrect when I'm typing it is slower. I know it can be turned off but I wish there was a way to remove the phones dictionary words. Also I agree I hate saving words I don't want to save simply by backspacing and spacing again. Do other keyboards have better autocorrect and if so, which ones?

I know you said this, but then why are you bothering to put up with it? Wouldn't it just be faster for you and no headache involved if you turn it off?
 
Swype is the answer. So much faster to type plus the autocorrect feature is far less annoying. Also, words can be eliminated pretty easily (pull up the word choices by double tapping the word, then hit the swype key at the bottom left). Want to delete the word "ii", no problem in swype.

I'd have to disagree. What's bad about the Swype dictionary is you can't edit it! Sure you can delete a word one at a time from within the text window but there is no "dictionary" for you to modify. My fiancee spells her name "Meghan" but 99% of the time it puts "Megan". I finally started just going with it haha
 
i became real annoyed with it, too. There would be times, when my whole conversation changed becasue the guy on the other end of my texts was like, what? I turned it off( the dictionary), but then when I type Im (for I'm), it would leave Im, and not add the apostrophe. That annoyed me even more....
 
I sympathize. I used to use swype because I like that style better, and I can't tell you how many times I would try to put in "Yea" and instead get "Urea".... Who uses the word urea in their phone regularly? Anyway, I had the same problem whether I used the stock keyboard or swype, and I finally tried out SlideIT keyboard, and I could not recommend it enough! You'd be amazed how much quicker you can swype when you can get rid of the words you only use once a year.

Accuracy skyrockets for 99% of words when you can delete the words that are similar but you only use once in a blue moon. Other times there is just no way around it (swyping "or" and getting "it"), but you can delete the word ii, and any other words you want to get rid of :)

I hope this helps. The paid version of the app is overpriced by market standards, but it was worth every penny for me.
 
One problem with swype though is that if you have facebook connected, all the names and last names are added to the dictionary. And if you delete them, the next time you turn your phone off/on they come right back. Very annoying.
 
Yes I stopped using swype because I have a daughter whose name is spelled differently and I was tired of changing it. Slide it did work better but it was too expensive. So I bought SwiftKey when it went on sale. Editing problems solved.

After having the phone for only 2 days I got so furious with auto correct I just shut it off altogether, yes it was nice that it capitalized and added punctuation automatically but the auto correct was just too much. I spent more time re typing the screwed up sentence it just sent then I did typing that sentence in the first place, pressing send, and then getting a response of "wtf?"


My advice: just shut it off


Settings > language & Keyboard > Touch Input > Text Input > Un-check Prediction

Now It's not such A bitch, I would highly recommend just switching it off before it drives you crazy X D lol

Earlier today, my girlfriend tried to text me "Great!! Well, no lunch for me today!!" but it came out "Great!! Well, no lynch for me today!!"

She was not amused.

Dude! I appreciate you posting this. I was trying to figure it out yesterday! I've had a couple of words that pop up that aggrevate the crap out of me!
 
That is odd. I do not ever get auto correct problems like on that site. Mine are minor. Like replacing if for he, and go for me.

Neither do 90% of I phone users. There are just so damn many of them out there it makes their shortcomings (and there are plenty of them) more visible.

With that being said I highly recommended the gingerbread keyboard. I absolutely love it.

This. I have a contact with the last name 'Ryu' so swype will never let me swype 'to'. 80% of the time it comes out Ryu, and its not like 'to' is an uncommon word. I've pretty much stopped using swype because of that.

I think the Gingerbread keyboard's dictionary is much better (and you have to actively tap to add a new word to the dictionary, so that keeps the typos out); my only two gripes with the keyboard are that it doesn't automatically delete the spaces after a word if you're adding a dash (and several other punctuation marks), so typing compound words takes an extra two taps and that it doesn't automatically go back to 'letter' mode when you hit space from the 'numbers/symbols' screen.
