WoW the Hot Spot Works Great

I had the hot spot activated today for the sole purpose of updating my new internet TV. I read in a web site for the TV that an important software update was needed to make the blue tooth on the TV to work right. Since I don't have WiFi I decided to have the EVO hot spot activated to try and update the TV. WOW is all I can say I got a 4G signal and the TV had no problem discovering it and immediately started to download 30 updates. I then tried it on my laptop and this thing works much better than my Sprint USB air card. I think im going to ditch the card now and save $30 a month. Im very impressed. Im using it right now as a matter of fact.

FYI, you can root your phone and save another 30.00.
 
So is there really NO difference between the built in Wifi Sharing ($30/mo) and the Wireless tether app from the market (root only). Ive only tried the latter so I wouldn't know.
 
Actually there is a major difference, $30.00 per month. Besides the wireless tether app there are roots that unlock the native sprint hot spot app.
 
there was a difference.. the free wifi-tether.. is an ad-hoc network connection. this may make a difference in some situations.. some devices will not see ad-hoc network. Example: sony PS3 will not work with ad-hoc.

but I think the newest version is not an ad-hoc.

I have had no problem gaming on my PS3 via the Wireless Tether app and 4G over the last couple of months.
 
There is another difference...if you were to pay the $30 a month for the Sprint Wifi, you would be allowed to go over the 5GB limit. Otherwise, if your data plan, (no matter what it says, unlimited or not) goes over 5GB, Sprint checks your account and if they found out that you were tethering, your contract is terminated. With the extra $30 a month, you have truly unlimited data. But it's hard to hit 5GB unless you are downloading torrents or doing major downloading so don't worry too much.

And about the rooted tethering working for PS3, I have PS3, Xbox 360, and many other gaming systems that pick up wifi signals and they work fine on wifi tethering and I am rooted without the $30 a month plan.
 
A guy I know said he used it on his xbox to play black ops multiplayer. He said it worked great. Pretty crazy
 
Hell, I pop my Evo into tethering so my friend can get on his DSi and play online. Works plenty fine when we're waiting for a cab to take us downtown or something. I've not seen any lag that's beyond the norm. As far as ACTUAL gaming, though, I would say only possible on 4g. I can't see Sprint's 3g speed allowing for even remotely acceptable game play.

This is NOT true. The 10 dollar a month "Premium Data Fee" allows for TRUE unlimited data. I have never heard of anyone getting popped for extra fees or being terminated due to tethering...rooted or otherwise.

From what I read, it also applies to 4G. I haven't heard of anyone getting their contract terminated, but it's in Sprint's guidelines so I don't want to be the first.
 
Hi all. I've tried the wireless tether app and the barnicle tether app. Wireless turns the evo into a router. Barnicle is an ad hoc set up. Not sure of the differences in operations. Wirless tether works great for me. Had 2 ds's and a laptop all pulling from the evo at the same time with very little lag that I've been able to notice. Rooting is the way to go. Opens up a whole other world for the device. Just makes ya have to learn a bit of how it operates. Which in my opinion is a good thing. This phone makes my laptop a dinosaur. But somtimes you just need a bigger screen. It's worth it just to save the 30 clams.
