about the side loading and blocking of tethering apps...

how do you guys think at&t will deal with the new website based android market?
I dont think at&t can block apps from there can they? I just tested it out and it works amazingly

android.com/market

They can't block the remote install or they would have blocked AppBrain and its Fast Web Installer already. As long as the origin of the .apk is from the market, i guess its kosher with them (or they can't touch it)...

No they couldn't. I think google would def step in. So here's an interesting tid bit Taylor at android and me did a hands on with the Inspire it allows sideloading and third party apps, do you think its the moto now and at&t has changed its policy?

I don't see how they can, since it's the Android market. Unless they build their own market and block the official one, and that would cause a shitstorm to end all shitstorms.

Great news to hear that its an amazing phone so far.

Kind of breaks my heart to hear about the sideloading and the measures that AT&T takes just to prevent these sort of things such as the tethering.

Might have to reconsider going from vzw --> att, even though I would be on a family plan(iphone family ftL:()

also, not really too excited to be limited to 2gb of data...

sigh, choices, choices

Whatever apps are hidden from the Android market on your phone (eg, PdaNet, Easytether, etc) are not able to be installed from the new web site. When you try to install it, it says "This item is not available on your carrier." We will still need some kind of sideloading solution.

I asked the rep to compare it to the Bionic. He said its a different phone even though people think its in the same family. He said that the Atrix can do webtop mode because of AT&T's gsm network. (voice and data at the same time). The bionic will not have motoblur though.

Does this mean the Bionic will have pure Google Android like the Nexus series?

I'd love an option at setup to choose Custom IU vs. Vanilla Android. I mean, they could even talk down the VA, say the Custom gives special apps, etc., but still allow the OWNER to choose.

Many of us have been arguing for this for a year and a half or so, since Sense and Blur launched. I like the overlays (except TouchWiz) but vanilla is nice too. THere were a few phones that did this, but now it seems that the manufacturers (all of them) like you to identify Android with their own "experience." Sadly it doesn't seem like it is going away anytime soon either...

How does it compare in size/feel to the focus?

Marc, can the fingerprint unlock work from the opposite direction? say... if you're facing the phone and you unlock from the front? or does it only work if your finger slides from the back?

if it can't do both directions, that's kind of a pain if your phone is a generic car dock / phone holder and you're looking at the phone.

I've been told that you can just remove the AT&T sim and you'll be able to install any market app. Has anyone tried this?

Yeah, my post was almost more of a "I wish" vs. what the actual situation will be now and moving forward.

At least, it can be "covered" with LP, etc.

Doesn't dilute my enthusiasm for this phone though.

Hey Marc, one thing I don't think anybody asked about, how's the GPS?

WiFi can be activated while in Airplane Mode

You don't even have to take the sim out. Just put it in airplane mode and turn wifi on. I was super pissed when I heard that at&t could do that, I hadn't realized they could dictate that to the market.

I have two questions that are audio related and one hardware.

  • Does the Atrix have SRS WOW, Dolby audio, or something similar available
  • Attaching to an aftermarket car unit via USB will I be able to play music off of the Atrix
  • How powerful is the antenna compared to other android smartphones, basically how is the signal strength.

I currently have a captivate and my car unit cannot read any music off of it, unless I use bluetooth. I have read that some android phones can connect to my car unit via usb just fine. I have a Pioneer Avic x920bt, if specifics are helpful.

I live in a moderate coverage area, AT&T is only provider that has any coverage where I live, and my captivate gets 1 bar at my house. Should I expect the same with an Atrix? My guess would be yes, but fingers are crossed.

Still going to pick up an Atrix either way, but these would be big pluses for me. Thank you for your help in acquiring any information that you are able to.

Any phone should have better reception than the Captivate. That phone showed low signal for me in areas where I've never had any issues before and I dropped calls like no other phone I can remember having.
