Going to the Atrix 4g training 2/2/2011!!

Yes it does.

Fantastic! I now have no quams about pre-ordering on Feb 13th. Thanks for your quick reply.

I wish phones didnt come preloaded with swype - you cant update to the latest betas easily. It takes manufacturers/carriers forever to release updates, and by the time they do, the Swype version is already out of date..

Tell that to my gf's incredible. The beta version constantly has to be wiped and cache deleted in order to get two days of working swype. Now she just gave up because it was a pain (especially for me) to get it working, and it would have to re-learn all her particular spelling quirks and offensive language. On the captivate I had for awhile it worked flawlessly first time, everytime.

So, I don't know much about smartphones (I'll be getting my first one) and I'm looking to the Atrix. I've done my research on rooting and sideloading, but I just want to confirm a few things.

Even though the bootloader will be locked, will rooting the phone (and side loading) still be possible? I hate that AT&T tries to dictate what I do the phone and just want to be sure that there will be hacks to get around their fascism so that I can customize however I would like and add whatever apps I want.

Also, am I right, in that the big concern with a locked bootloader is that I couldn't put custom ROMs on the phone which would prevent me from updating Android whenever it's available? I would have to wait for the official version from Moto?

We don't know yet if it will be possible to do anything at all; however history suggests that every phone gets rooted sooner or later.

You are spot on that an encrypted bootloader would mean that you can't load custom ROMs and you'd be at the mercy of Moto to update the software. I distinguish encrypted from locked because most Android phones on the market (except the Nexus series) have locked bootloaders, but in the past it has been quickly possible to circumvent the locks most companies have on the bootloader. With Moto's efuse and trusted computing platform, they were able to encrypt that whole portion of the NAND with hardware implemented RSA keys thereby making it all but impossible to crack through the normal methods. There's still plenty of speculation as to whether the new Tegra chipsets have similar security features as OMAP or lack the hardware encryption. We'll find out soon, hopefully...

^Thanks for this! So, it may not even be possible to root the phone (though unlikely)? Hmmm, I may have to wait for a purchase then just to see...

Also, thanks for clarifying on the encrypted bootloader. I'm not as concerned about that as I am rooting, but it's good to know what I'm getting into.

Rooting will happen (eventually) and as for the bootloader, the most advanced one to date has been a moto (the droid X) and it was mostly cracked in around 24-25 days (by Koush at XDA), only the kernel is completely encrypted. We will have custom ROMS (at some point) but without touching the kernel (which would open up things like adding to the functionality of the fingerprint reader, or native over/under clocking the processor, etc.; As fast as this device is I don't see there being a NEED - I didn't say WANT- for any of this for quite a while). So don't let potentialities scare you away from what will be THE device for at least a few months (ages in the Tech world), statistics and history are on your side!

Marc,

How does the screen of the Inspire compare to the Atrix? Do you remember if the Atrix had that screen door look? I had the captivate, but the text drove me crazy and I had to return it. Text on the captivate was extremely jagged.

yeah I do not want to burst your bubble, but the screen on the atrix was just average. the colors were good, but that was mostly due to the super bright screen. If i had to compare it to the Inspire, Id say the Atrix wins in brightness, but the inspire wins in clarity.

Its a shame because supposedly the atrix has a really nice refresh rate and would have been nice to get a super optimized screen to handle that. It's almost as if the Atrix could have done with out the "qHD" screen. Dont get me wrong the atrix is a nice phone, but in terms of the screen, its standard.
