Root Temp and Permanent "One Click Root" for Archos 70 and 101 tablets

I was a bit skeptical of this at first but I have installed the app "Archangel" and now have Permanent root.

This does not require installing SDE (which many people avoid because SDE voids your warranty).

You can turn off Root if you want to but you can also set permanent root so that when the device reboots, you will not lose root!

The app is only recommended for the Archos 70 and 101 tablets with firmware versions 2.0.71 and 2.1.2 however,I have installed this with my A70IT running the latest stock firmware (2.1.4) and it worked perfectly.

The instructions are simple:

1) Make sure you have 10mb of space available on the internal storage
2) Make sure you are connected on Wifi
3) Run the Archangel app
4) Click to install SuperUser application
5) Click to get root!
6) Check everything is working correctly, try an app which needs root
7) Once you have root you can tick the "Permanent" root option to always have root.

Whats the benefits of root on the A70? (aside from allowing custom firmware, which as I understand there's nothing close to cyanogen or the like yet, its all alpha/beta right now).

Back in pre froyo days it was basically for hotspot and setcpu, right? but hotspot is moot since no 3G, and I'm not bothered about setcpu (unless you reckon it makes a big difference?). Though I suppose if you can revert it there is no loss in trying (?) just don't want to lock myself out of the official upgrade path for firmware.

Obviously installing custom firmwares (ROMs) is the main reason for root...but ROM development for the Archos is slow at best. For me, the main reasons to root is Titanium Backup. In the event that a custom firmware is available, or for some reason my tablet has to be wiped clean (I have a current backup of all of my apps). You can also install SDE and change kernels to overclock it. I am using the stock kernel because I have yet to find a custom kernel that is 100% stable.

I can run Root Explorer and remove system apps, use SetCPU to set underclock options to increase battery life, take screenshots with a program like drocap2, etc.

But you are right...without custom ROMs, the benefits of root are much less.

the archangel root method isnt 'true' root, and doesnt allow re-writing so you wont be able to flash new roms using it (you will need the SDE method for that), but it will allow you to use superuser, titanium backup, setcpu, busybox etc. Plus you can use it to run custom scripts at boot to do things like disable adds, or change the location of the swap file to the SDcard so that you dont wear out your internal flash with it.

Hi there. I just got my ebook reader tablet Archos 70b. I am wondering whether the above described Archangel will work with my device? And will I then be able to install Google Apps (I would like to have access to the Android Market)? How would I need to do this (I am quite new to al this, so a step by step description would be great)?
