Root Root for Noobs

I have been reading on this and I think I'm ready to do it. If I root my Samsung Epic 4g, will I still be able to get 2.2 when it finally comes out for Sprint? I have read that you might not be able to do the OTA download on the device. Whats everyone's input on rooting? I'm not really needing the tethering, so what other things can I look forward to. Thanks for any input.
 
From my understanding you can root and be able to update to the official 2.2 when it comes out if you have all your factory apps still on your phone, but wheres the fun in that? :-P i would say try the leaked 2.2 and root to start. Then you can get used to it and then maybe remove some bloat(factory apps you dont want or need thats preinstalled) or try a custom rom. You can always go back to stock at any time. But if you are like the vast majority you wont want to go back, even when the official is released(holding my breath turning blue in the face!). 2.2 is such a major upgrade in performance and funtion its ridiculous. Plus you gain the ability to use flash and apps2sd and loads more apps. Just my opinion mind you. Good luck in whatever you decide! :-)
 
Thanks. I finally got the nerve up to try it, and I love it. I even got brave enough to add the midnight rom to my phone, and wow, I am blown away. I think I may have found a new addiction, playing around with this phone.

What method did you use to root your phone?? I rooted my EVO but the process for my wife's EPIC appears to be different.

If you have a name of the rooting method, great...if you have a link even better! THANKS!:D

One Click Root & Recovery for the Epic 4G! v2.5.5 Now has ClockworkMod Redirector! - xda-developers

and

[MOD][One Click Root] Clockwork Mod version 3.0.0.5/6 - UPDATED FOR EB13! - xda-developers

which one you use will depend on what you plan to do AFTER rooting. the second one will prepare you for ext4 roms.

hmmmm, it works for me, saved to my computer just fine. when i click the link it takes me to a blank page, but then i right-click on it and choose 'open in new window', it works fine.

Exclusive from one another, but if you do the 2nd over the first it will do no harm. You can't do the first over the 2nd to my knowledge.

Until you know which ROM you want to flash (if any), there is no real need to go to EXT4.

Correct. To go from cw3. 0 to 2.5 gotta go back to stock first then 2.5. Ext 4 will work on stock rom though so you would get the benefits of the updated file system speed and being prepared for roms. I dont believe we will be seeing many if any sticking to the rfs system(current stock file system) so imo it would be better to be prepared if anyone is gonna root and do roms at some point.
 
OK, first of all if I shouldn't continue my new questions on this thread, just let me know.

I went ahead and rooted my phone using "one-click-root" v2.5.5 as per the hyperlink in this thread, all appears to be working well, here are the indications that it was completed;

1) ROM manager now runs (we'll get back to that)
2) I see a "superuser" icon I never had before
3) I see a different "recovery menu" when doing the "3 finger boot". It was here that I did a back up of my ????
4) This menu indicates "ClockworkMod Recovery v2.5.1.0".

I'm running into a problem though, each time I go to do a backup of my ROM, using RomManager, I get a warning and a error message as follows;

a. Backup Current ROM - "You must have CWR installed before continuing Install now y/n?"
b. When I select install - "error installing recovery"

Any help would be appreciated, I do eventually plan to install the MidnightROM.
