What features do you want on the Evo 2?

Well, prepare to be upset, because Sprint usually announces new stuff at CTIA Wireless, March 21~24 this year, and often introduce the new models in summer - and models typically have a one-year lifespan.

With the Evo launched on 6/4/2010, early announcements and an Evo update in June are very reasonable to expect.

I can't think of any device that Sprint announced that was a total surprise. Either Sprint scheduled an announcement (like the Echo) or it leaked months in advance (like the Shift) or even both (the Evo was leaked many months before Sprint held their announcement).

By rights - the Evo _is_ a Desire-class phone, so a Desire HD2 would be the logical precursor to the new Evo.

The Desire HD was released about 5 months after the Evo, so it wasn't exactly a precursor to the Evo.

Again, the Evo was called the Supersonic by HTC. And we already knew about it at this time last year.

And just to be clear, I'm not saying we definitely won't see an Evo 2 or a good phone from Sprint this year. I'm just saying that it's certainly not a given that we will.

The Evo was an exercise in integration and it was a step up from the Desire.

It did, however, use the same SoC processor and same amount of ram, 1/4 GB less rom, etc, etc. By changing a few radios, going to the next memory pack available for production, next camera sensor and an FFC, next screen size - keeping all other factors same - it's simply a Desire-class phone.

I'm ok if you want to call it the Evo-class and put the other large phones in that class. I used to do exactly that, myself.

But the Evo was a tour-de-force in integration - the Desire was the original tour-de-force in performance.

The Desire HD, as you know, was basically an incremental step up from the Evo.

Well aware that we knew about the Supersonic early.

It's still logical to expect that the new Evo will be a re-integrated DHD2.

Never say never - but it would seem unusual for them to not replace it at its one-year life point.

(huge apology - hit back on my browser, hit edit on last post (not fully) shown, expecting it to be this one - added my comment to yours by mistake. WAY sorry to touch your post - no harm intended.)

the only thing i would like to see added to the evo is the ability to change themes/skins or colors on the evo without having to root it.

Well if you want to get technical, there was the Touch, then the Touch HD, then the HD2, then the Evo was the next in THAT class of devices (it was basically a CDMA HD2 running Android).

And again, the Desire HD was released about 5-6 months after the Evo.

So I would not be so sure that we are getting an Evo 2 just because there is a Desire HD 2. By the same logic, we could have said there will be an Evo 2 because there is an HD7 (which is basically the next HD2, running Windows Phone 7 instead of WinMo 6.5).

If we are to assume that there will be an Evo 2 just because there is a Desire HD 2, then we should also note that the Evo 2 should have been expected before the Desire HD2, since the original Evo was released before the original Desire HD.

While you're saying the Desire HD 2 is a sign that there will be an Evo 2, it is just as accurate to say the Desire HD 2 showing up without word of a Supersonic 2, is a sign that there will not be an Evo 2 anytime soon.

Again, I am not saying we definitely won't see an Evo 2 this year. I'm just saying that all the people who keep posting "Sprint will have plenty of top notch phones this year, stop worrying" don't have anything to back that up. It is definitely not a given, and should not just be taken as a fact that Sprint will have plenty of top notch phones this year (or an Evo 2).

I agree that Sprint has historically replaced phones on a yearly basis. So we may see an Evo 2 this this year. But what we don't know is if Sprint is planning on replacing the Evo with the Echo. We all hope that is not the case, but it certainly isn't a given.

speculation .. is speculation.... it is about just trying to guess what might be.. with the facts and or rumors that we can see.

I speculate one way
Earlymon can speculate another way
you can speculate a different way..

all are speculation ..
and we share to past the time... till we do know real facts.
then another round of speculations...

my vote is there will be an "evo 2" type device this summer.. and it will be similar to what the Desire HD2 will be.

I agree it's all speculation, no argument there.

lol, I think I got my threads mixed up. In the Sprint announcement (Echo) thread, a bunch of people keep saying it's no big deal and Sprint will have plenty of phones this year. I don't know if people were saying that in this thread or not, but that is what I was talking about when I was saying it's not a given.

I just realized this is a thread about what we'd like to see on an Evo 2. I had been thinking it was that same thread, lol. My bad.

While you're saying the Desire HD 2 is a sign that there will be an Evo 2...

That is not what I'm saying at all.

I'm saying that there will be an Evo replacement this year.

I'm saying it's likely to be similar to the DHD2.

And again, I'm well aware of when the DHD came out. And the rest of them.

I've come to a conclusion that only some things should be changed on the Evo 2. Being:
1) Thinner
2) Better screen resolution
3) Android 2.4
4) 8GB Internal Memory Space.
5) 1.5 GHz Hummingbird Processor
6) 4.4 SuperAMOLED Screen
7) 2000 mAh Battery
8) Wireless N Capable
9) Root Friendly

The EVO replacement announcement will be mid year.

Unless they make it tablet size.

TS (throws stone, runs away)

So do you think they announce it mid year and then release it end of year, or do they announce it the same day it's released and it is for sale mid year?

Remember, if we're on a yearly replacement schedule, then the Evo 2 should be for sale at the beginning of June. So pre orders should begin sometime in May (like last year when the first Evo was launched).

I guess it's possible that Sprint was very good about keeping this under wraps, and HTC hasn't sent it to the FCC yet. But if we don't hear about it at CTIA, then I would have to say the chances of it happening are slim to none.

lma0! :D

I'm expecting roughly June sales with a suitable pre-order period, yes - based mostly on the fact that TSMC's supply of 65 nm process chips can't last forever and they're getting overbooked from demand for newer mobile chips. (By the first week of January, they had already announced that Tegra-2 demand alone was 60% above expectations for _this_ quarter.) HTC alone has told suppliers to expect them to sell triple this year over last.

How it's in Sprint's interests to lead their line with a older phone in face of market expectations for more or HTC to milk supply for an older assembly any longer than they'd have to - that's the basis of my expectations.

If I'm wrong about chip production and inventory, and wrong about HTC's assembly processes, then I'm wrong in my expectations.

I guess it's possible that Sprint was very good about keeping this under wraps, and HTC hasn't sent it to the FCC yet. But if we don't hear about it at CTIA, then I would have to say the chances of it happening are slim to none.
I completely agree.

The FCC submission we'd expected _might_ be driven by some perceived need to keep this week's announcements under wraps.

And I put nothing past Sprint - I would think that all they'd want is a flagship. While I think a shift away from HTC and the Evo would be completely nuts, I wouldn't discount the idea that they'd go with Samsung or LG for their next flagship - LG is being especially aggressive right now.

Add to that last year's Clear / Sprint relationship confusions, the rumblings for a Verizon / Sprint merger and this year's LTE push, and anything can happen.

For all I know, Sprint's idea of their next flagship is an unholy Nokia/WP7 offering for later this year (shudder!).

Unfortunately I am thinking more and more that Sprint is banking on the abomination that was announced on the 7th to be the new flagship!:(

Well all I know is what you said isn't what he said and what I am saying is a combination of what somebody else said and he said because what you said is nothing like what anybody else has said so how can it be said that any of us have said anything pertinent yet?

Here is another possibility:
We know for sure Sprint has HTC Windows Phones slated for this year (much like we knew about the Evo last year at this time). So that could end up being their flagship phone. They stay with HTC, have a flagship phone for sale this Spring, and then release the Android powered Evo 2 next year (when all of the original Evo buyers are eligible for their 2 year upgrade).

That actually doesn't sound too far fetched.

Only problem I see with this is it will cost them quite a few customers who are eligible for an early upgrade and don't want to wait another year for the Evo 2 or something comparable.

If they back off keeping unlimited data, I know I will be gone for sure.
