Updated: Rumor Costco 3g $699 + other plan options

Went in and talked to rep at my Costco.

I asked about the $699 price. He was not totally sure but thought it would probably start at a $10 discount of $789 then in a few weeks might see it go lower. He is basing that on what happened with Galaxy. Said they started $10 off then after 2 weeks lowered by about $100.

So my guess is this does not start at $699 but $789 ($789 was also reported by some others) and it may or may not go down after a few weeks.

Just got off the phone with the guy at the Costco wireless phone kiosk. He says $789 to buy outright, $599 with a $50-80/month 2-year contract or $649 with a $20-30/month 2-year contract.

I was about to ask about the reported rebate of activation, when we got cut off. Argh!

Guy said he was reading the pricing info from the sheet he was given this morning. WTF?

So wait, Costco is only going down to $649 for the $20 a month plan?

This isn't how Verizon Corporate is doing it are they?

No idea. Dude says he was reading it off the info he was given, while setting up the display. Then suddenly we got cut off and when I called back I got sent to VM. Over and over.

Pretty sure a VZW sniper took him out for talking, because the guy at the VZW store I called this morning denied any knowledge of launch dates, or even that they had units in the store, which they obv do.

Yeah, the lady I talked to flat out told me it was coming out tomorrow, was the $599 price with contract and asked me if I wanted to setup a time to come in.

Called Costco

To get the the $599 price must get the 5gb data package. Stinks told him I would go to Verizon or best buy.

Yeah, I finally got ahold of them again. The prices I gave earlier are accurate, $599 with a $50/month committment and $649 with a $20-$35/month committment. He also confirmed the MIR for the $35 activation fee.

This is crazy. I'll just wait until Costco has the WiFi only models (in about 30 days) and use my AMEX card that has nothing on it. There is no way in hell I would sign a two year contract for a Tablet. Heck, come Sept/Oct the Quad Core tablets are rumored to be coming out which would make the Xoom obsolete

I bet the wait for wifi only is more than 30 days.

Not really. From ongoing rumors, Verizon has a deal with Moto that they will wait 30 days to release the WiFi only unit as this prevents customers from returning the $800 unit because they will be past their 30 day return window (Costco you have 90 days). Plus with the iPad 2 announcement next week (Mar 2), Moto WILL NEED to have the WiFi only unit ready to go (as the $800 model won't sell well AND Apple is ready to crush all Android tablets with the iPad 2 release with a MUCH lower price point). Apple will probably sell another 16gb WiFi only sku for $499 again. Next week will be a major week as far as tablets go with Apple holding a presser for the iPad 2. You may not like it BUT it's going to sell very well and the other Honeycomb tablet makers (including Moto) will have to get a WiFi only model out ASAP under (or close to $500). I love Apple having a Presser to announce the iPad 2 as this will undoubtedly force Android tablet makers to readjust their pricing schemes. Competition is Beautiful.

Thats a great theory but isn't VZW's return policy now down to 14 days?

I went into store confirmed below as well. I was planning on buying from them but not now. I don't like the way they are structuring price as it is kind of deceptive since Verizon is offering something different. Looks like Costco will try and pocket an extra $50 for those only wanting 1 gb data.

Return Policy - Verizon Wireless

Yes, you are right, Verizon's is 14 days BUT Bestbuy's is 30 days, which is why they are waiting out the 30 day return policy (this allows BestBuy not to have to exchange the $800 units). BestBuy will also sell the Xoom on contract for Verizon. Costco's is 90 days but I am pretty sure Verizon does not expect to sell many Xoom's thru Costco. I am pretty sure BestBuy had a say in all of this 30 day WiFi only issue. They are now the biggest B & M electronics retailer in the US.

I am just thinking of picking it up tomorrow at Costco and then returning it when the WiFi only version comes out (sort of a try it out for 30 days thing). As soon as I walk out of Costco call Verizon and cancel Activation and the Data plan. Will buy off contract

The XOOM will be classified as a Tablet or Computer and thus subject to a 14 day return window and potentially a 15% restocking fee at Best Buy.

Returning In-Store Purchases - Best Buy

Ask before you (best) buy!

The 14 days is correct but the restocking fee has been done away with as of last year. The only thing it applies to now is appliances.

Thanks, I thought that was the case, but I couldn't remember if that was just for the holiday season. My pre-order receipt still had the restocking policy printed on the back; I suppose it was an older roll.

I will definitely ask before I leave.

Yay for RewardZone Silver and 45 day return policies ;)

I spent a lot of money there when I worked there hahaha.

And I still do pickup laptops/bigger equipment like TVs from them unless I can find one with significant difference in price elsewhere.
