Root how a phone goes into cardiac arrest

hi all,

in case my sig isn't updated (it probably isn't), i'm running either SC 2.2 or 2.3, theme'd (shouldn't matter?), and voodoo'd as well.

today, while listening to music and gtalk-ing, my phone suddenly went from 40ish% to 0%. then, it decided to do its death rattle (vibrate once, pause, then vibrate once more). the death rattle has happened before when an app FC's, but also happens sometimes without reason and puts the phone in a coma. the buttons will stay lit, but the phone is nonresponsive. i battery pulled and all was well..

but anyone have an idea why? it'll happen once in a while, not enough to bug me lol, just wondering what's causing it

You said that you were themed and it (shouldn't matter?) I had an unresponsive phone a few times with 2.2 and various themes but since SC2.4 with no theme I haven't had a problem.

That's weird...I've never heard of anything like that happening before. Did it seem to stay at 40% for a long time, much longer than normal? Maybe it froze there and when it really hit 0% it did what it did.

When it goes zero would the buttons still stay lit?

Known issue with SuperClean 2.x and above - we call it either the "sleep-bug" or "sleep of death".

It often manifests with some power button weirdness and random haptic buzzing.

I'd Nandroid, then wipe everything and start over with the full deodexed version of EB01 (what I had to do). Adrynalyn has been putting out some fixes but they don't seem to be having much effect on the problem. It's easy enough to de-bloat, get some of Andryn's custom and/or AOSP apk's and add the cool stuff back in in order to replicate a SC install, but without the sleep-bug.

Good luck.

Mine just stopped responding at 41% battery life. touchscreen wouldn't work.
Then it went to sleep. Hit power button, and was able to unlock with now responsive touchscreen. Opened Handcent, and it didnt respond to keyboard. Then I got a bunch of haptic feedback, and the phone reset by itself. But it reset it into safe mode. then a few seconds later, it reset itself again. Now it is continuously cycling between resetting and staying in safe mode for a few seconds. It's like the damn phone is possessed. It's done like 10 cycles of this. I'm now going to pull the battery. I'm running SC2.4 voodoo.

40% was normal, it didn't freeze there

it went to 0% before going into a "sleep of death" as some refer to it lol :P even at 0%, i could still use the phone

excellent recommendation, except i refuse to wipe everything and start over for this intermittent issue :P it's just too much of a hassle! lol!

Lol - you can refuse to wipe all you want. Just be prepared to deal with the sleep-bug until you do. Trust me, I fought it for 5 days straight with that same internal argument (too much hassle to factory reset/wipe). I ended up spending about 4x the amount of time and effort trying to "fix" it, than I did just wiping and starting over with a factory reset. Oh and did I mention it gets worse over time? To the point where I was hard-booting my phone every 3rd time I tried to use it.

If you use Titanium Backup after a clean wipe to restore apps and app data only - other than running google setup you will be right where you were before, only without the sleep bug.

But hey, if you are cool with your phone randomly quitting on you, keep on keepin' on!

phone's ok so far, sleep bug hasn't happened for a while! :) having to hard-boot every 3rd time would kill me... if it ever gets that bad, i'll wipe and restore
