iphone 3g to atrix

I recently made the android plunge and here are my thoughts. I am coming from a 2 -1/2 year old iphone 3g that was on its last legs. The speaker no longer worked, the battery life was nonexistent, and from all the software updates, was so slow, I couldn't take it any more. I was going to wait for the iphone 5, but decided I needed a phone now so I thought I would give the atrix a spin.

There is a big learning curve to get used to the phone. I kept trying to wake up the phone with the home button I have used on my iphone for so long. The power button/fingerprint reader on the back has taken several days to get used to.

I did a lot of reading before I bought the phone, so after one day, I decided to get launcher pro plus to replace the moto launcher. This helped my transition a lot. There are little things on this phone I don't like, but overall its been a nice transition.

I couldn't get the default messaging to recognize both my yahoo and gmail mail accounts, so I have been playing around with different mails. I didn't like k-9's interface, so I have been using improved mail which is pretty good. I don't believe it has push functions so I have it set to fetch every 15 minutes, but I might not have my settings correct. Any help here would be appreciated.

I miss the voicemail built into the dialer. I have downloaded googlevoice and it works pretty well. The text conversion is a waste as it gets a lot of the text wrong, but its a neat feature. I haven't gotten used to the alerts being on the top of the phone. I like apples icons which give you alerts for missed calls, texts and emails with how many of each missed. I have set laucher to do this, but I get alerts at top and sometimes on the icons. I havent gotten any alerts on the improved email, but its probably not supported.

Its hard to tell about the battery life. Its ok, but I have been playing with it a lot, so its hard to say if its a decent battery or not. I am a contractor so as I am waiting for subs to show up, I play on the phone. Lately, I have had a lot of down time, so lots of email, browsing, angry birds, etc. I can get through the day on a charge, but by 5:00 its at 20%. My iphone when it was new seemed to do a little better, but its been so long, I really can't say for sure.

This phone is crazy fast. Everything loads with ease and great speed. I am still getting used to the menu button on the phone as opposed to built into the app itself. I love the back button on the phone. It is really handy when I am surfing the web.

Overall I really like the phone. I do miss things about my iphone, but I think in time I will adjust. I love the power of the phone. Its truely is amazing how fast this sucker is.

I actually am aware of that. I just liked on my iphone it had an icon for favorites, recent, contacts, keypad and one for voicemail. If you had voicemails, it would put a number over this icon telling you how many new voicemails you had. Its just the little differences that are taking some time to get adjusted to. Its not a deal killer, but its a nice touch on the iphone -- or at least it was something I have been used to seeing for 2 years, and now its not there.

I just came to android and the atrix from the iphone 4 (with a brief run on the focus and wp7) and MAN WHY DID I WAIT SO LONG!!!!! I could write a book about what I like better about android vs ios but I won't waste everyones time (plus most of you know all of the reasons already). I will give apple a nod on build quality (the iphone 4 to me is the best phone in terms of build and quality) but the atrix isn't bad (infact its pretty darn good too). I'm just a happy android user who broke free from the cult of apple, although I still have a mac computer that I will NEVER get rid of! haha :) but man I LOVE THIS PHONE!!!!!!!!!

I agree with a lot of the above posts. The phone is very fast, and the Android OS definitely wins over the Apple iOS for me as well. After the first day or 2 even the battery has for the most part been adequate.

Unfortunately I think I am going to be returning the Atrix and either trying out the HTC Inspire (which is the only other Android device on AT&T that I heard was any good) or just going back to my Iphone 3GS. The reason comes down to this issue with video/text messaging. On my Iphone 3GS I was able to record a video of any length and easily text it to someone within seconds. With the Atrix, you have to resize the video which then makes the resolution of the video much worse and the actual size is much smaller. On top of that, if the video is over 10-12 seconds, the phone asks alerts you that it is too long of a video and therefore you must select a clip of the video.

This doesn't make sense to me at all. How a phone of this power and caliber isn't able to send video/picture text messages without destroying the resolution or size of the video is extremely frustrating to say the least. The Iphone 3GS I had did not have these issues.

If any of you share any of these issues or know of any possible solutions I would be very grateful. Try it out for yourself so you can see what I am talking about. (Record a video clip for at least 20-30 seconds and send it to someone or even yourself)

You could always email it...Weird that you say that when I used text to send a video the quality looked like crap..

I had to re size video all the time on my 3GS..

I have had this phone for about a week, and today, I have been dropping calls left and right. After the last drop call, I rebooted the phone. I hope this does the trick. I had no dropped calls until today. If this continues, I will have to think about another phone.

Anyone else having these problems?

I mentioned in another iphone to atrix thread, but I'll mention it here as well. Get WidgetLocker ($1.99) from the market. You can set it up for 'easy wake' and have hardware buttons unlock the phone.

Is it still possible to use the fingerprint security with "easy wake". I want to wake my phone using the volume button and then unlock if i want to by using the fingerprint scanner. Is that possible?

Good question...I'm not a fan of the fingerprint scanner (it had a hard time getting a read on my fat digits) so I haven't tried that out.
