Blocking access to the net

RDPearson

Hello all

Just got my new HTC Desire on Friday. Fantastic phone.
I have been searching for ages over the weekend trying to find an answer to a question I have but so far have had no luck so thought I would ask here.

Is there any way of controlling how an app can access the net? I am on a limited (500mb) data plan with my carrier. I installed Skype on Friday and according to the app "Network Usage" Skype has sent 332Mb and received 331Mb. I have only been on calls for around an hour so this seems very high to me. For obvious reasons I would like to dissallow Skype to access the net via anything but wifi if that is possible. I really done want any nasty suprises by going over my data plan limit and getting a huge bill.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance
Richard

Look up juice defender.

Thanks for the input but is that app not just a battery manager? From what I read it seems that it disables & enables wifi & 3g depending on your setup. I dont want to just disable 3g as then other apps besides Skype wont be able to access data either.

I did find Droidwall which has this functionality but it only runs on a rooted phone.

JD has the option to enable or disable certain apps from gaining access to the net, been a while since i used it though.

Either turn it off altogether when you're not using it or get DroidWall - its the only app i've heard of that can do such a thing but RDPearson is correct, your phone needs to be rooted to use it.
