is it as simple as dl'ing a ROM and installing it from your SD card?

Even simpler, as ROM Manager handles it all for you. You tell it to d/l a ROM, it does that, asks you if you wish to install it immediately (if not it's stored for future use), prompts for a backup of current ROM, then boots into recovery, does the bizz and reboots afterwards.
