Get your Captivate replaced for free, solve all your problems!

Hello all, Ive seen this mentioned in a few posts but I thought a dedicated thread would be more helpful. To all of you who are still having GPS and shutdown issues with your phone call ATT and they will replace it free of charge with a perfectly working model. My GPS is FLAWLESS, there are no shutdowns and the overall performance of the phone is infinitely better than my original. I am able to obtain GPS locks while driving at high speeds and can even get a lock indoors, without running any "FIX" or any sort of special software. I promise you all, you will not be disapointed, this is what this phone should have been from the beginning and I am now a 100% happy Captivate user.

I'm assuming you need to be an AT&T customer? I was with them but have moved on so I am probably dead to them now and wouldn't be able to do this. Sounds cool for people who are able to do it though. Is AT&T that desperate to keep customers from switching?

So att doing the right thing now makes them a desperate company? I guess there really is no pleasing everyone

Which versions should be replaced to get a newer one that supposedly has working GPS? I think mine is already a "new" version. I got it in early Nov '10 and it is a 1009 build. My captivate works fine other wise and I'm worried I'd be tempting fate to trade it in.

I walked into the store, and got my Captivate replaced with the HTC Inspire. For free.

I guess that awesome treatment I got was due to the fact I wrote the AT&T Wireless CEO. I had enough dealing with customer service and being passed around, so I went to the top. His secretary got back to me and said they were going to make sure I was a satisfied customer. A couple hours later I received a call from the regional manager and said to walk into any store and pick up any phone I wanted.

That was a pleasant surprise...

...unless, of course, you bought it from Walmart, Sams, the kiosk in the mall... Then AT&T acts as if you don't exist.

Not really, I'm on my third captivate and I bought the original on launch day at walmart. All my replacements have been through ATT.

Cool. Did you have to return the Captivate?

Lucky you... They refuse to help me. I'm told to take it back to where I bought it.

Me too. I was told to get my replacement from where I've purchased it from and thank god BestBuy honor the return and I end up replacing it with an Iphone4 for my wife.

When I do my upgrades, I always buy cheaper from non-ATT stores, and when the phone gives me problems within the year, I call ATT up and they send a new/refurb and want me to send the old one back, no issues whatsoever from buying from a 3rd party.

ROMS aren't always a sure fix tho. The only sure way to get working GPS is to keep trading until you get a working one.

I disagree - Not EVERY ROM is a sure fix, but I haven't read anywhere of someone not finding a GPS fix for their phone with SOME sort of ROM.

Some work better with Cognition, some work better with FireFly or Andromeda, but each of them tweak the GPS slightly differently - Besides, if someone's phone is like mine, it didn't work AT ALL when stock - I would've gotten rid of my phone for another if all I did was check it for working GPS when it was stock.

so, how exactly did you do it? did you just walk into a brick store and tell them, or did you have to set it up beforehand by talking to someone in customer service on the phone?

is there a "magical term" that it helps to use?

I did the same thing a few months ago.

I went to an AT&T store in the mall, said my GPS didn't work. After the guy looked it up on the computer he directed me towards an AT&T service center (which was a decent drive but not too bad). 5 minutes after entering the service center I was walking out with a brand new Captivate. The GPS has worked amazingly well on the new phone.

The closest AT&T service center is in Birmingham, a couple of hours south of me. I can't take the time out just to get the phone fixed. So getting fed up with AT&T, I called Samsung this morning and they'll fix the phone. Just going to have to be without it for 6 days. Good thing I kept my Motorola K1.

I had the opportunity to jump to Verizon or Sprint, but I stayed with AT&T out of misplaced loyalty. That's over. And in 1 year and 6 months, or as soon as I can afford the pro-rated cancellation fee, you can bet I won't be renewing with them.

That sucks - when I said a decent drive I was talking about a half hour :). Initially they assumed that I'd want to have the phone mailed to me from the service center so you might be able to work something out that way. I'd call the service center and see what they will do.

So, if I am able to get a new phone, any tips on how I can back up my settings, currently downloaded apps (especially my paid ones) and pictures and get them on to the new phone?

thanks

I wish I knew for sure...

I'm hoping my apps are linked to my google account so when I get my phone back they'll be available to download again. In the event they aren't, I still have an account with App Brain and have sync'ed with them so I know what I had as of yesterday.

As for pics, you need to send them to an external SD card, or connect to a PC and copy them all over. Oh, and you can "export" your contacts to an external SD as well then re-import them when you get your phone back.

Or, you can purchase Titanium Backup (I have fouud the free version to be useless), and try that out. I don't know much about the paid version, but folks seem to recommend it.

When i called AT&T tech support, they had me call Samsung support. Samsung tried the usual over the phone checks, and when that didn't work, they wanted me to send the phone in for repair. i told them that there was no way I could do that and they put me on hold for level 3 support. I was on hold for 30 minutes and finally gave up and called AT&T back. I wound up getting a refurb in the mail a few days later.

Yeah I had a fiasco with Samsung and the AT&T store. I finally had to call AT&T's 1-800 number and they gladly sent me a refurbished phone. I ended up getting my phone working though and sent back the refurbished phone.

Absolutely. You can even install paid apps across multiple devices if they're using the same Google account. I had a couple of paid apps on the Captivate, installed them to the Atrix, bought a few new apps, just installed them back over to the Captivate!

Now that the Market has web "push", maintains transactions, etc., I exclusively use it vs. AppBrain.
