App to set a profile ("home" with no 3g)

ilWizard

Lurker
I need an app to help me set a profile. When I'm home I don't need no 3g, no e-mail or synch. Just a cell phone that drains as little battery as possible. When I'm away from home I need everything (push e-mail every 15 min, synch etc etc). So I need something simple that by clicking a widget button ("home" and "away") will set all the preferences I have in mind. Nothing fancy or automatic as Locales and Tasker, but something simple and highly customisable.

Thanks for the help!

I don't know about your phone, but on mine I could hold down the power button and choose to turn off mobile data. That turns everything except the phone capabilities off.

...and since, at home, you're in a WiFi hotspot (I assume), you can do everything, including phoning, over WiFi (which is also easy on your data plan!).

The app "Y5" (in the market) switches automatically to WiFi hotspots (and 3G off) that you have connected to before if you're within range.

BTW, by "turning off mobile data" I assume you mean switching to Airplane Mode, which switches off 3G phone connections.

Incorrect. Switching off mobile data, is just that - all data is disconnected except the phone and texting capabilities. Turning on airplane mode is a different setting, which as you correctly stated, turns off the phone connection as well.

"Easy" being relative. Tasker's steep learning curve is an obstacle.

While I realize Tasker isn't for everyone, frankly, it kicks ass. The dev is awesome, the app is awesome, and it has a free trial. I always recommend people to try it - because many will discover how many things they can actually do with their phone that they never thought about before.

Some profiles on Tasker do take a little time to set up, but this would be pretty easy to do. One context (wifi near) and one task

amlothi - cool to see a link to a thread I started in someone's signature :D

"As well"? Do you mean it also shuts down WiFi connections? Because it doesn't! In Airplane Mode I can use WiFi, but I cannot phone in or out over 3G. So if you want to phone when in Airplane Mode, but connected to WiFi, you can use apps like Mobyler, Skype, Tango, ooVoo, or any other such app/system. But obviously not over 3G.

On my phone it does (HTC Desire). When I first turn on airplane mode, Wifi goes off.

However, Tasker still turns it on to perform Wifi Near checks. Those all work. I can also manually turn on Wifi and use it, while my phone still shows airplane mode being on.

If I want Wifi to stay off, I need to turn on Airplane mode and disable Tasker.
