[ROOT] RegawMOD Hero Rooter v1.3 | Updated - 3/06/11

Ok, I'm totally new to all of this and don't understand a lot of the terminology that is being used, so bear with me. But I have been reading up on this a lot trying to learn what I can. Am I to understand that by doing this process above that I don't need to do anything past that? I have read about picking a new ROM and all of that but it doesn't mention that above. Please, be gentle. And thanks!

The process above will root your Sprint HTC Hero and flash the ClockworkMod Recovery for you. What would be left for you to do would be to make a Nandroid backup and then flash a new ROM and GApps if you flash a non Sense UI ROM. ;)

If you need specific details about performing what I said above, feel free to start a thread in this forum asking about it. We will take care of you. :)

Ok, I appreciate that. I guess I would like some advice as well on what to use. I am just looking to speed up my phone and get better battery life. I don't need to try to take over the world with it, you know?
Any suggestions?
And I'll definitely post a thread about the Nandroid backup... ;)

I would recommend trying out AOSP Android 2.2 version 0.9.9.2 although AOSP Android 2.3 is good too. Both will speed up your smartphone and most likely yield better battery life than Android 2.1.

I have added a post about Nandroid backups in the thread you created. Check it out.

Thanks again for your help. Now another question...where would I find those once ready and how would I do it? And is it easy? Ok, so that's three questions.

Go here for AOSP Android 2.2: http://androidforums.com/sprint-her...d-v0-9-9-2-aosp-2-2-1-froyo-12-10-2010-a.html . Go here for AOSP Android 2.3: http://androidforums.com/sprint-her...-aosp-2-3-3-cm7-gingerbread-03-07-2011-a.html .

It is pretty easy. You put the ROM of your choice on your microSD card, along with the GApps, which are the Google apps that are not packaged with the custom ROMs. You boot into recovery make a Nandroid backup like I explained in the other thread. You wipe cache and data, then into Advanced and wipe Dalvik cache, and then into Partitions and format boot, cache, data, and system. Then you flash the ROM from your SD card, and afterward, flash the GApps using the same method as the ROM. Just reboot your Sprint HTC Hero and you will have to sign into your Google account and then start setting things up.

I really appreciate your patience and insight. I will keep you posted.

I think I'm about to start this process, finally. I hope you're on standby! Also, before I start, do I need to have HTC Sync installed on my PC? And I do have to have USB Debugging checked and Mounted as Disk Drive when I connect, right?

Nope. You do not need HTC Sync to accomplish a root via RegawMod as far as I know.

As for USB Debugging, I am not 100% sure on that but you probably do need it on. Turn it on as it will not hurt anything and you can always turn it back off after you are finished rooting.

Ok, but now I'm having the same issue as ccoll5 was up above. It tells me that it's not a CDMA Hero and I'm not even plugged in yet. I downloaded the 1.3 x86 this time.

I would open a new thread for your yourself, this is where i update the Regaw app, not really a place to root your phone, open a new thread and this way you can refer back to it when needed

Do you know how to use IRC? Go here: Android Forums . It is up to you if you want to or not.

I will have the same user name in there as I do here. See you there if you can.

It is better if he opens a new thread so others can learn also

I actually have no idea how to deal with the RegawMod issue, DonB. I was just going to show him how to root via Z4Root.

If anyone else knows how to fix that problem, then that would be great to post in this thread. Thanks.

It is simple, mount and one click and it is done, Z4Root will do the same, which ever he prefers, I was simply trying to0 keep this thread on track, thus the reason why I mentioned to open his own thread for quick reference

Oh, I totally agree with your reasoning. The thread should be about RegawMod. :)

I think I even mentioned earlier in this thread for him to start another thread about it. Keeping threads on topic is important. ;)

I'm rooted my phone using RegawMOD Hero Rooter v1.3. But when I tried to do a Nandroid backup by pressing volume down and power button and then clicking Home to get to the Recovery option, the phone display the red triangle error screen. What am I doing wrong and what should I do to backup my system before installing custom rom. thanks

Try running the Rooter again, every once in a while the rooter gives a false positive. I like to say it's 99.9% effective lol.

Are you using Windows XP? I have found out that it's only windows XP users having problems with this rooter. I'm still trying to find someone to help me out to debug it on XP, sonce I dont have XP..

wow, thanks for the super fast response, and I have run the rooter twice and both time it said it was successful.

Did you download Clockworkmod, and flash a recovery image ??
