Best Buy Details

K I just looked it up and the state minimum is 5.25 percent and the maximum is 8.25 percent. It depends on the county in where you buy.

In Concord it is 7.75 and in Charlotte it is 8.25

looks like i'll be driving to Concord to save that .50 :) nah. not really. gas alone would cancel that savings. damn you county!

hm. hopefully BestBuy will have some amazing better deal than VZW on release day. free gift card, anyone?

Jay--or anyone:
buy thru BestBuy online---does it charge you any tax?
if Yes, is it either:
1) proportionate to the state in which you live
OR
2) proportionate to the state from which the phone ships/the BestBuy web-based office is located

i'm hoping it's like Amazon---i don't think i ever got charged tax from them (and now NC is pitching a fit about it bc they want backtax revenue)

I have question regarding to first month advance payment.

Do I have to pay the bill for the first month of service right after purchasing the Tb or wait 2 to 3 weeks for billing cycles ?

Collecting Sales Tax: Some Sites Have To, Some Don't

If an online retailer has a physical presence in a particular state, such as business offices or a warehouse, it must collect sales tax from customers in that state. If a business does not have a physical presence in a state, it is not required to collect sales tax for sales from customers in that state.

Consumers' Responsibility to Pay Sales or Use Taxes

Consumers who live in a state that collects sales tax are technically required to pay the tax to the state even when an Internet retailer doesn't collect it. When consumers are required to pay tax directly to the state, it is referred to as "use" tax rather than sales tax.

The only difference between sales and use tax is which person -- the seller or the buyer -- pays the state. Theoretically, use taxes are just a backup plan to make sure that the state collects revenue on every taxable item that is purchased within its borders. But because collecting use tax on smaller purchases is so much trouble, states have traditionally attempted to collect a use tax only on big-ticket items that require licenses, such as cars and boats.

Some states, including Connecticut, Maine, Nebraska, New Jersey, and North Carolina, have changed their attitudes and are stepping up efforts to collect use taxes. But bureaucracy, complex tax rules, and limited state resources have thus far prevented most states from pursuing use taxes. Since state governments are losing substantial revenue, the collection of use taxes may become a priority if the federal government continues its ban on Internet e-commerce taxes.

If the company has a physical presence in your area (i.e. Is there a Best Buy building in your city?) then you will be charged tax.

It's a lot of good info, but i'm looking for a specific yes/no to the question:
"Does BestBuy online charge you tax on a phone when you purchase that phone slated at $99.99?"---i don't believe i posed it as clearly in my previous post.

reason being--as stated earlier--sites like Amazon have not charged tax in similar instances with other types of items

EDIT: i believe HighHandicap just answered my question. -thanked-

Straight from BB site.. In short yes they do charge tax

How do we calculate tax?

The tax rate is based on where your purchase is being delivered or picked up. We are required by law to charge all applicable state and local taxes for the order's destination. Best Buy is required to collect tax in all states where we have a physical presence. You can estimate your tax by using our zip code cost calculator.

If you're a tax-exempt entity, you can take advantage of your tax-exempt status for qualifying purchases made at Best Buy stores and BestBuy.com. Learn More about tax-exempt purchases.

So...crazy best buy news for tonight.

The Thunderbolt is no longer in our inventory system: neither the sku (1949051) or the model (bby60ld) work anymore.

It still shows up in our Point of Sale system...but not being in inventory=bad

So I wonder what old bennn over at android central has to say about that, that guy is looking more and more wrong everyday and he sure isn't making himself look good.

Ya know, I thought this situation was messed up before, but I'm now shocked as to how f'd up this really is. I honestly thought we were turning a corner and it would be within the next couple of weeks, but this is truly ridiculous. Damn.

Could it be that the SKU is changing and it is just being updated because they are coming in??

Man, I would love that to be the case. This thing has got me all cranky. Sorry about the rant post above.

That rant was tame compared to some of the things I've seen people say about this phone haha

I thought exactly the same thing. I thought it was almost over. This is just amazingly sad at this point. Something has to be said.

Unfortunately, the CTO said it. The phone will come out by the second half of the year. Which means it could come out on New Year's Eve!
