Help What is that thing in the front of the phone for?

i circled the thing in the front for the people who dont know what im talking about. That thing next to the word sprint, the other side of the camera.
i never saw it light up or anything

What is that thing for?

Was just a guess.

I'd go with light sensor then. For auto-brightness of the display.

It's the proximity sensor. The camera-like lens on the far right is the light sensor.

And I'm so glad to have this so my face/ear isn't pressing buttons on the screen when I'm on the phone. Instinct sucked for that!

is there anyway i can reconfigure how the proximity sensor works?

right now it registers near as far and far as near... super annoying cheek dialing in mid conversation. ( i know this question will be off topic when i mention this issue is with a samsung moment)
