Help OG Droid Can't Get A Recovery Image?

Famf

Lurker
I'm running Project Elite v5 and I was wanting to try the Cyanogen Mod 7 release candidate, but it won't boot into recovery. I checked the PE settings and it said I don't have a recovery image. So I tried that trick where you flash alternate recovery in Rom Manager, but it always just says an error occurred while trying to flash the recovery.

What can I do now? Is there another way to get a recovery image?

Welcome to the forums,

Try reinstalling ROM Manager, then flash Clockwork Mod, then SPRecovery, then Clockwork Mod again. I know you said you did this but I don't know if you did all three or just tried flashing it to SPRecovery.

Also just in case you can't boot into recovery from ROM Manager try powering the phone off and when you power it back on hold down the "X" on the keyboard. This is the manual way to get into recovery (not trying to insult you just trying to cover all the bases).

One last thing, if you do get into recovery make a backup before flashing to your new ROM. Not that you don't but it wasn't listed in your post and it is better to be safe than sorry by not mentioning it.

I uninstalled Rom Manager, flashed clockwork mod, it froze for a bit, then said it was successful. I went into PE to see if it had worked but it said there was no valid recovery image. I then went back in to try SP Recovery but it said an error occurred.

I tried booting into recovery manually a while ago, but it just reverts back to the motorola logo until I let go of x.

Thanks for the help so far though. I was wondering if I could use ADB to fix this, but I haven't had to use that for a long time so I may need instructions.

When I suggested flashing CWM then SPRecovery then CWM you need to do it one after the other without trying to go into recovery until you complete the three flashes. I don't know why it doesn't stick right after the first time but this has worked for a number of people in the past.

Ya, that's the first thing I tried, but when I flash the alternate it always says "an error occurred while trying to flash the recovery." and it just never works.

ya might give this option a try ..... http://androidforums.com/droid-all-things-root/267461-raidzero-recovery.html Its talked pretty good, but I have not tried it myself.

While I have never personally had any problems with Rom Manager that the previous posters suggestion would not fix, others in these forums have been insisting that Rom Manager is the issue. Good Luck!! Perhaps it will help you out.

I would agree with you on that. While some may have legitimate errors with ROM Manager, it has taken a beating lately being blamed for everything that may go wrong on a phone. I have used it flawlessly to install numerous ROMs, make backups, flash recoveries, wipe data and cache and boot into recovery. While I do manually flash things I do it more so that I know how in case I get stuck in a bootloop and can't access ROM Manager.

Not to imply anything with the OPs issue but more of a general statement, alot of these posts dealing with ROM Manager errors and problems with ROMs seem to occur with people that are also not wiping both data and cache, understanding how ROMs and kernels interact, or taking the time to extensively read the All thing Root posts before starting into the world of custom ROMs. I'm getting off my soap box now.

Edit: And most importantly for the OP +1 on RaidZero, I would try the RaidZero recovery and see if that agrees with your phone. I have read a number of positive reviews on it.

Hey bro it seems like it a Gingerbread thing. I had the same issues with CM7 and UD 3.0+. Apparently, ROM Manager isn't fully compatible with GB yet. I have an OG and since rolling back to a froyo rom, I haven't had any issues (ROM Manager or otherwise). Hope this helped a bit.

Not to contradict you jaydoubledub, but I have been running LGB for some time and have none of these issues. Clockwork has always worked for me, both in Foryo and GB. So has ROM manager, though I just use it to do my backups. For installing ROMS I dl them to my SD card and boot into recovery.
