Root [WIP] CyanogenMod V6.1.1 for Ascend 0.0.1 Alpha released

Ok, so apparently I got word from a member of another forum I go to that yesterday a Cyanogen Mod port for Ascend has been released. It seems to be an alpha, but there's not much I know about it. Here's the post that the member linked me to:

CyanogenMod V6.1.1 Alpha * Author: pip2kk aka etnie
* Current Version: 0.01 Alpha
* Description: This is a **VERY** alpha build of CyanogenMod V6.1.1 ported to the Huawei Ascend. Expect bugs and issues. Please report them to (BUG TRACKER TO BE SETUP SHORTLY!).
* Many THANKS to isaacj87 for his Github repo @ https://github.com/isaacj87/! This wouldn't have been possible without your help. Also many thanks to the CyanogenMod | Android Community Rom based on Gingerbread team for a wonderful mod!
* You can find my Github repo @ https://github.com/etnie/!

And the source: [WIP] CyanogenMod V6.1.1 0.0.1 Alpha .bloG

So now my question is this: Would installing this ROM be similar to installing IcarusMod? As in, using CWM to wipe the system, boot, cache, dalvik cache, etc. before installing this from the zip? I'm asking this question now so I don't have to fear bricking my phone when trying to emulate the steps I used for Icarus Mod.

EDIT: Just as a note, I do not take credit for the mod, as said before, a member from another forum linked this to me, and I just decided to share it. If it is proven false or not my place to post things like this, feel free to delete it.

If I am Correct You dont have USB Mounting,MMS and Camera with this Mod

This is a different mod from Daedalus. So far I have tested and USB mounting does work. However, the stock Camera seems to force close when I try to run it.

EDIT: Tried Camera 360, and I get this checkered pattern with a square bouncing around, which I take to mean it doesn't work.

Yeah, I believe you do. That's how I did it.

I'd like to stay on Cyanogenmod, but unfortunately, if they don't come up with an update to get the camera working by the weekend, I'll have to go back to Icarus as I'm going on a trip and need the camera feature.

I'm the guy that ported CM6 to the Ascend. The user above is correct. USB mounting, Camera and MMS is not working.

I have stopped all development on CM6 and don't plan on picking it back up. Pip2kk (a.k.a Etnie) built from my sources, but I don't think he has any plans to work on it or anything. (Like me, I think he's moved on to the Optimus V).

I'm currently doing work on CM7 and if I keep going with developing for the Ascend, that is what will keep going.

Good luck!

If anyone is interested in trying to work on this, my Github repo is available: http://github.com/isaacj87

Thank you Isaacj87 For all the Work you have Done and for everything Cant wait to see what other Magic you can Pull out with the CM7 I have Icarus 1.1 right now and its great but would like to Try CM7 If and when it is ready please let me know

I look forward to seeing CM7 for the Huawei Ascend, seeing as it seems unlikely we will get the 2.2 update (unless MetroPCS' 2.2 update works with Cricket phones, which I doubt).

MetroPCS's version of 2.2 can easily be made to work with Cricket's. That's how I was able to combine carrier info into Icarus 1.1 (Surprised, nobody picked up on that one).

A simple kitchen work will get Metro's version working with Cricket. Now, how well will 2.2 run on the Ascend, that's something I'm interested about. Metro and Cricket are NOTORIOUS for putting a bunch of useless junk on their ROM builds. That's why the Icarus project first came about.

It'd be cool if you made an Icarus Mod based off of 2.2, but you're probably too busy working on Cyanogen Mod 7, which, to be honest, is the one I'm looking forward to the most.

That's funny. I said the same thing. I only said it though because once the official 2.2 is out, I feel it will be a whole new pathway for modifications. I'm still having a conflict because I was offered to buy that new 4G android (Samsung Galaxy Indulge). My friend is moving to Germany, She has to leave it behind. X.x It just sucks because my area doesn't even have 4G yet. Though it's promised soon. I just hate 1x. A lot.

Since the update is coming from huawei, do you think cricket and metro will even have time to add a lot of bloat to it, or could we get more of a naked android build?

That's a vaild question. Huawei released a "beta" version of 2.2 to the C8600 (sister phone of ours) and it was decidedly unfinished. Lots of things didn't work on it (for example, the keypad didn't light up). Now, I don't think Huawei would do that to us, but you never know with them...

I think that they'll probably HAVE to add the Metro/Cricket bloat as some people ACTUALLY use it, lol. I've yet to see a manufacturer release a ROM that didn't have crap on it. The only 2 I've seen are the Nexus One and S.

Oh, BTW.

Anyone running this ROM, are you having trouble logging in to Google/Market?

I had to do a nasty hack to fix that issue and I don't think it made it into this ROM.

About the only time you don't get a lot of bloat is if you pay significantly more for something. Check out the difference between buying a computer from HP/Dell/Acer and buying an Alienware. And yes, I know Dell bought Alienware, but the rule still applies.

If Cricket and Metro get an official 2.2 release, there's no way it goes on their phones without adding all that crap, IMO, unless it's an upgrade-only type thing, and will not be on any new Ascends going forward. They're bound to have licensing deals or kickbacks for bundling that software in.

That's true. I wonder if it will be 2.2 or 2.2.1. The latter seems to be much harder to root.

Me! Me! Me! Me! I'll take it. We've got 4g here. :D I'll still keep my Ascend of course.
