How to backup phone...for 2.2 upgrade

I have an HTC Aria. I just got a text from ATT the other day saying I could now upgrade my phone to 2.2. What do I do to back up my data? I have a gmail account and I think I remember someone saying that I would be able to get all my apps from there. What about all my text messages. Will they be deleted during the upgrade? Is there a way to save them?

If its an OTA update, your data SHOULD be fine. However, its always a good idea to make a backup just in case. Your texts can be backed up using a number of apps, SMS Backup and Restore is one I use.

Your contacts and calendar SHOULD already be backed up to google, provided your contacts are Google Contacts and not Phone contacts.

Apps you purchased will be remembered, as long as you sign into the same google account. Apps that were free and downloaded wont be remembered, so it's best to make a list of the ones you already use, then you can just re-download them. There is no way to backup app's data unless you are rooted. So for example, if you play Angry birds, you will lose your saved games.

But again, this is all only if the update does a full wipe, which updates usually dont.

The AT&T Froyo update is not an OTA update. It is delivered as an new RUU, so it will perform a complete wipe of the phone during the flashing process. As was stated in the previous post, your contacts should be backed up as Google contacts, but you can also export them to your SD card for safe measure.

Is there a way to export contacts to SIM card?

I just completed the update on my phone. There is a way to send your contacts to the SIM card. In the contact you want to move, hold on the number and a box will pop up asking what you want to do, save to SIM is an option.

Also, if you downloaded any apps, write the down so you can find them later. I kept reading that they would be "connected" to my google account. The only one that was there was the one I paid for, I had to search out all the others.

There's some things that I like about the new update, and there are some things i'm not so crazy about.

oh and FYI....... downloading the update to your computer will take FOREVER! I ended up downloading it over 3 days!!!
