Glitchy? Poor battery life? Says who?

Most phones are glitchy in some ways when they come out. Some get better by software upgrades, and others by hardware upgrades. The whole memory card vs sd card for apps is glitchy. How programs work in the background is glitchy, and should be fixed for battery life alone. I am not stating the phone is worthless, I am happy to own it. However, there are several real issues with the phone that need to be fixed.

I wonder what it would take for people to view it as a true successor.
1) First and foremost, it MUST have a kickstand in order for it to be an Evo successor. Plain, simple, period. (We forgave the Shift because it had a slide-out keyboard).
So to be a successor it must have the Kickstand + Correctly placed USB port.

2) After that, it needs to have the giant screen (Though this is no different than a Thunderbolt or Droid or any other 4.3 incher... but it's still a necessity for being an Evo successor).

3) Minimal bezel - The thing needs to have no physical keys on the face, and must have the screen running pretty close to the edges.

4) Front Facing Camera. Nuff said. (Well, maybe something else... taking it back to #1. There must be a kickstand to prop the phone when using the videochat on the FFC)

Beyond that, it just needs industry setting specs.

In light of the above, I think the Thunderbolt makes a better successor to the Evo than the 3D.:o

Instead of spending time and effort developing 3D, I wish they would first develop an optical image stabilizer. I would rather have smooth 640x480 video than 3D 1080P that is bouncing around. Many small point-n-shoot cameras today have really good optical image stabilizers, that smooth out the video and reduce blur in still photos. Maybe there just isn't room inside the EVO to include this kind of feature.

Having said that, 3D might be kind of amazing, for both video and still shots. Can't wait to see.

Regarding 5MP instead of 8MP, I couldn't care less. 5MP is plenty for this quality of lens, focus accuracy and camera shake.

The 3D on the thing does look cool, but I'm going to take a clue from apple and skip this version of the Evo. I think I'll play around with the Nexus S 4G I only have 9 GB's on my EVO, so 16 on the Nexus should work just fine.

I have my eye on the Nexus S as well. My contract expires in November, so I'll see if there is any buzz around a new Nexus on Sprint (hopefully by HTC or Motorola) by then.

Or I might just buy the EVO 3D on day one! The specs and software are tempting. Crazy as it sounds though, I need to see the cases that Sprint/HTC have planned for the EVO 3D before I make up my mind. I feel like a different back cover could make the device more appealing to me....

Megapixels don't determine the quality of pics. The iPhone 4 takes better pics just being 5.

Also I don't understand how a dual core processor, bump in RAM & ROM, and increased screen resolution isn't a worthy successor. What did you expect?

Also the new sense won't be the same, because of the slower processor. Just like when Netflix's releases it's app it will only be supported by dual core android phones. Not saying it won't be available for the Evo and others after.

im sure the evos 1ghz snapdragon will handle the new sense as well as gingerbread just fine

1.2 daul ghz processor is exciting and more than double what were used to but until the proper software is available that is truly optomized to take full advantage of the tremendous amounts of potential speed. no dramatic differences will be seen between it and a 1ghz snapdragon

i'll keep my evo and buy a tablet

i can't see 3d anyway...color blind...and I have 0 depth perception.

I also could swear that I already posted this but I don't see it... haha haha ..I need to start sleeping more than 3 hrs a night

Everyone seems to think the EVO 3D is just an EVO with a 3D screen. I also think the 3D feature is sort of gimmicky, but the device is a full-fledged successor from the EVO 4G, and is one of the best featured - if not THE best featured devices available in 2011 (as the EVO 4G was last year).

-qHD Display @ 960x540 - MAJOR upgrade from E4G
-1.2GHz Dual-Core SoC + 1GB RAM (Qualcomm's MSM8660) - MAJOR upgrade from E4G
-1080P Video Capture - MAJOR upgrade from E4G
-Large hardware camera button - this is great great great!
-Ships with 2.3 Gingerbread - great great great!

I have been thinking about this for the last few days and I agree with you. When I first heard about the EVO 3D I was not that impressed. Then came Bluescreen with his stories and I was hyped about this phone. Then came CTIA and was a little down and had to take another look. The fact that it is shipping with Gingerbread and Sense 2.0 should be enough. This means it most likely will get a one or two more updates when Google updates their OS. The EVO most likely will get Gingerbread and thats it. The EVO 3D also has a bigger battery and 4GB of internal memory. I was hoping for 8GB of internal memory but 4 will do. I am not that crazy about the 3D feature but its cool. This phone has a better camera, and better screen. So for those not upgrading what else do you want in your phone? I love my EVO but I think this phone has more of what I need and want. I was undecided but I think I have made my decision. I'm getting this phone.

I suspect I'll upgrade eventually, but I'm happy as a clam with my phone at the moment, and don't really have any pressing need for a change. I've spent so much time tweaking it so it's just like I like it, I'd hate to have to go through that whole process again!

Think I am going to be in the same boat as you, worse case I could go back to my EVO. But Speed,qHD screen, Sense 2.0 and Android 2.3 speed like pretty good options.

Just waiting on price, and to see what the kickstand case will look like. It would actually make put a case on the phone.

I will probably upgrade, more for the Adreno 220 than the stereoscopic screen. I've played with the new Nintendo portable and while the 3D effect is cool, it's difficult keep your eyes in the sweet spot for a long period of time. The new EVO doesn't have a variable 3D effect slider that the 3DS has, so it's display may be even more fatiguing to use. Speaking of which, the demo videos seem to imply the 3D switch on the EVO is just for the camera, which is really dumb. HTC needs to make sure that switch readable by the SDK so game developers can enable toggling the effect mid-game. Or support it natively in the graphics driver.

Question for long-term Sprint users, how much do you guys think the upgrade will be for mid-contract customers (namely Evo owners who started last June)?

I just thought about something. Evo represents evolution. I was watching a couple reviews on the Evo 3D & something the guy from mobile tech I believe said. The rep also said something as well that made me think. One was like it

To be honest, while I was initially excited about the Evo 3D, I really would have preferred an Evo 2. This is not the Evo 2. Taking some it's better selling points, i.e. kickstand and eliminating them just doesn't make sense. I would have preferred an aluminum uni-body design, increased internal storage, better camera (not necessarily more pixels) Gingerbread, of course Sense 2.0, better hardware buttons (like the one they are using for the camera would have been nice for a power on off switch), metal volume rockers, the QHd screen with increased resolution, dual core/better GPU and gorilla glass. The new locations of all the ports etc. means more expense for cases and mounts. I think the Evo should have "evolved" to be HTC's flagship device since it set the bar for Android handsets. As such, I think most people would have sprung for the extra cost (for producing a superior device) because it would have been a leader in Android handset development and set a new bar; that is what informed customers want and demand. This one is going to go into the heap of gimmicky new 3D handsets and loses ground actually to the Thunderbolt (which really enhanced the original Evo cues) in design which is disappointing. More important I'm 99% sure this will come with a locked signed bootloader. While I'm sure that eventually it will be unlocked, this trend in new phones is starting to get disturbing. That said, I'll wait until I see what happens with development on this phone. Development unlocked potentials on this phone that set it apart. Unlocking the FPS cap (before HTC released it), an army of root specific apps, Full HDMI, faster more efficient kernels, and so much more have made the Evo a monster device with no equal currently. It may not be the fastest (though still plenty fast), it may not have the best screen (though it looks just fine to me), but it does everything and does it well. Many handsets cannot duplicate what it can do because the hardware is not available to utilize (e.g. hdmi port etc.) but with time, they will eventually catch up and best the Evo e.g. Thunderbolt because it is an enhanced Evo.

I've been a Sprint customer for over ten years but it is a little puzzling that they are out of touch with what customers really want out of their handset. It is agonizing to say, but the competition out there is fierce. The opening portal for people deciding on what company to go with is what "must have" devices they introduce; ask AT&T. The original Evo was a groundbreaker and head turner. The new Evo (or Evo 3D because it is NOT a worthy successor IMO), could have brought even more converts over to Sprint who would have been able to say they still have THE must have Android device AND the best plans. Will I upgrade? I really don't know right now though I planned on it when I heard that the new Evo would be introduced at CITA. I must say though that I'm still just SMH when it comes to Sprint's decisions. I was angry when we waited with baited breath for the "big" Echo announcement and got a Kyocera phone. Then at CITA Sprint was supposed to hit it out of the park. While a new Evo was "interesting" it wasn't what I expected. The HTC tablets are one OS behind the competition, The XOOM is a retread, no announcement about the new Samsung tabs, no word on LTE/Wimax or other announcements that would have been truly exciting. Aside from the free M2M, unlimited data and other plan goodies, what now separates Sprint from the big boys and what stops a long time customer from not looking over their shoulder to see what other companies offer? I really like Sprint services and by my longevity with the company I feel I have shown my loyalty however, while I'm in no position to demand anything I do have the right to "ask" for top tier devices to compliment a large monthly expense. Sorry for the long post, but wanted to get this off my chest.

Conclusion: Underwhelmed.

I'm still lovin' my EVO 4g. I've got it rooted and ROMmed and customized the way I want it. I have an upgrade and may do it eventually but for now I'm not in any hurry :D

I think Sprint will give EVO users a $50.00 discount off the retail price of the EVO 3D. Just my speculation. We'll see, right?

To your earlier speculation, I think it would be a huge mistake to limit the 3D effect to media output. HTC should let developers play around with the camera and its buttons. Think of the possibilities of 3D-enabled applications.

After reading this thread I'm leaning towards getting the Evo 3D, because, as was said, it really is an upgrade. Yeah I don't like 3D stuff tbh, but hopefully we'll be able to turn that off and just enjoy a great device. I'll miss my kickstand though. I used to show that off constantly.

wow wasnt aware that you can not turn off the 3D, if this is the case thats a definite fail.. it can be cool to have the option to take pics and videos in 3D, as well as play games and watch videos in 3D, but to have to perform every basic function in 3D would inevitably be a nuance, why would i want to send a text message in 3D, make a phone call in 3D, view facebook statuses in 3D, etc.. so if there is not button to toggle the 3D on or off as well as no slider to lighten the effect, i cant imagine that not being a deal breaker for a ton of people, that will truly be an epic fail

1080p video capture +
Higher pixel density +
1.2 Dual Ghz Processor ++
Stock with gingerbread/new sense + (Evo 4G will catch up)
3D IMO - ..it probably dosent look like true 3D and even if it does that would give me a headache, plus too gimmicky. just straight up dont like the idea of it
No kickstand -
5mgp Dual back facing cameras - another negative imo . although it takes 3D pictures that dosent really appeal to me, I would much rather have seen them bump the camera to 10 or 12 mgp (like the nokia n8)
Physical appearance and form factor - I think the Evo 4G looks much more appealing

The positives definitely outweigh the negatives, but are they enough to ditch my current evo.. i doubt it, but we'll see when there is more in depth looks at this thing

Y'all do know that megapixels dont really mean shit and are just a marketing buzzword to make you think its better
