Help Can I make the update reminder go away?

I get this annoying message every day to install update 2.3.340. I don't want to install it, but I'd sure like for the message to stop popping up daily.

There is enough crapware forced upon me already that I can't uninstall, and from what I've read this update only gives me more. It's the principle of it, I don't like being forced to accept things I don't want, it has nothing to do with the performance of the phone with the extra apps I don't want.

You may want to consider rooting your phone, that way you can remove any of the bloatware that you want.

Does rooting lessen the phones security when browsing the internet? I want to root it, but my brother advises against it for some reason. He has some 4G phone through Spr!nt and he is rooted.

Not at all, the phone is just as secure but you have more control over it.

Hmmm... I'll read up on how to root it, I'm fairly sure it's what I want to do. I don't know much about phones, so hopefully it isn't too tricky.

Read up, find Z4root, install, open, click a button and you are rooted. Then get Titanium Back-up and then you can go through and freeze all the bloat. It is still on your phone, but it will not run at all. Also once you root and freeze the bloat apps that should make the reminder to update to .340 go away.

heres the thing, if you never access the bloatware/crapware/whatever you want to call it, then it doesn't do anything. It just sits there like any other icon on your phone. Most of the things that VZW push anyways are just download links or a trial version of an app. Again, they aren't using resources and aren't slowing down your phone by just sitting there unused. I'm tired of the "it takes up too much space" argument too. The X is not a BB and has plenty of RAM and plenty of storage space. Everyone tends to get all worked up about the bloat. I don't like it, but you know what, Verizon subsidized more than half of the price of the phone so that I could have it for 150 dollars on launch day, so realistically, they own more of the phone than I do. Plus, the benefits of having the most up to date version from Google greatly outways any perceived negatives from the pushed bloat. There were many bugfixes with the .340 update that made the X much better on battery life, and snappier overall.

However, that being said, it's your device. I'm just trying to help explain what the stuff on your phone does. You are def free to use it however you want. I'm rooted, ROMed, overclocked, and undervolted to try to squeak out every once of usability in my phone.

Again, welcome to the community, and if you start into the All things Root subforum you will find a WEALTH of great information and great people that are here to help, me being one of them. I will warn you of one thing though, once you root/ROM your device, it's highly addictive ;)

Also, one other big real warning. Rooting your device voids your warranty. So tread carefully.

If I recall, you can delete some file to stop the update check. But this requires root access.

Sorry, can't find the post on it.

You can get rid of the download by booting into recovery and doing a wipe cache, or you can navigate to /cache with a root enabled explorer and just delete it.
To prevent it happening again, get Anttek App manager from the market and freeze updater and upgrader.
