Signing up for a 1 year contract when purchasing the Bionic

Because even if it isn't under contract if you buy a new phone outright you can 99% of the time put it under your existing account.

I even asked two Verizon people at their 800 number line, they said that you could buy one outright and put it under your 30/unlimited account.

But why would you want to do that? I understand the need for unlimited data, but when buying the phone at full retail value, will you ever recover the $$ you spent on the phone via saved $$ on data?

Depends on the price of the tiered data caps...

If it costs an extra 25-30 bucks a month then yes you will.

I am positive that they could not get away with charging an extra 25 or 30 a month. There would be riots

They could if they charge 30 bucks a month for 3GB, 50 for 5GB, and 80 for 10 GB or something similar.

They can charge what they want, what are you going to do go to AT&T who caps you at 2GB and has a shitty network?

The problem is that they have a monopoly on a great network...

they would never make data plans for phones as/more expensive that the data plans for aircards/hotspots.

Just because you can't imagine it doesn't mean they wouldn't do it.

Phones can become mobile routers now.

All I am saying is that it can happen.

Although I am returning my Thunderbolt...

I returned my TB today and besides now having to wait for Bionic to be released, I had the fear of you-know-who put in me when the Verizon rep pointed out that I could potentially be losing out of the $30 unlimited data plan. I was even willing to keep paying for the plan without a smart phone in order to keep the $30 unlimited. No dice. The guy told me that the data plan pricing is attached to a device. Meaning TB could have the $30 unlimited and Bionic or some other phone could be tiered. And that is besides the obvious fact that TB is already out. What he was saying to me is that data plan pricing is tied to the manufacturer/model of the particular device.

On a side note...the HTC rep was in the store when I was returning my TB. I tried not to look her in the eye! They told me they have had at least a half dozen TB returns due to battery life. They couldn't give me any information...er...rumor fodder...for Bionic.

It's like being 10 and waiting for Santa to come...
