Stock Froyo vs. Cog 4.0

I just did an ODIN clear and went back to stock Eclair. Right now I'm updating to Samsung's Froyo. I was on the fence between Samsung and Cog 4.0 because it's based off of the official Froyo, but I've had too many problems with 3.4. After using Cog 3.4 for a month or two, my MP3s would randomly stop being playable (couldn't play music, my custom ring tones wouldn't work, etc.). My battery life was horrible. Out of the blue, my Swype keyboard stopped working (this was the last straw, because I absolutely depend upon swype).

With Cog 3.04 being so buggy, I wanted something a little more stable. I'm going to see how the Samsung Froyo works first, because I think I trust them a little more to make a non-buggy piece of software. But for anyone who has used both (Samsung and Cog 4.0), how are they different? Which one, would you consider, is better? Thanks.

I have never used Cog or any other ROM, but if you really like and depend on SWYPE, you won't like stock Froyo. Swype is way worse after the upgrade. There is a thread about it that you should check out.

I am running cognition 4.1.1.

Cog 3.04v was NOT based off original, it was a ported version which worked well enough but, doesn't really compare to 4.1.1 that I am running. It bad bugs due to the dev having to tweak things to work better.


Cog 4 is more or less EXACT same as stock, minus bloatware, a few extra customizations, rooted, and +100 epic points.

Eh, I think I'm going to try Cog 4.2. I've been using stock Froyo today, and I've gotten some annoying lag and have had pretty bad battery life compared to Cog 3.04. Plus, as stated with Swype, I was getting some weird suggestions when trying to use it. I'll let everyone know how I feel about the difference (which may not be very worthwhile, considering my limited use with stock Froyo). Also, the bugs in Cog 4.2 may not show up for awhile, but I'll try to make some comparisons.

if you want to have something like stock, cognition is pretty good (4.1 and higher). cognition is the ROM that's been consistently stable and simple for those who don't need extra bells and whistles.

i would've kept cognition, but i didn't really like touchwiz so i changed ROMs.

apart from cognition, serendipity and paragon are pretty good too. i just flashed to firefly and so far i like it.

I like some of the extra features (different types of unlock screens, the battery percentage in the battery indicator in the notification bar). But I have yet to be able to get a lock on my GPS in google maps, which is a little frustrating.

Other than that, the battery in Froyo in general seems a lot worse actually than in Eclair. While using Cog 3.04, Stock Froyo, and now Cog 4.2, I can barely get a days worth of charge, even when not using it very much at all. I'll try to update anything else I notice in the future.

I tried out Cog 4.2 for a day as well, and was also unable to get a GPS lock. Only other issue was a couple of random reboots, and the battery draining very quickly (having read up I anticipated the extra drain, so no worries...)

All in all, I really liked everything else about the ROM. This was my first flash, and I am looking forward to trying other ROM's in the near future.

have you gone over to xda developers to see if the issue about battery is fixed? i did read that you can install a certain kernel that is suppose to make the battery last longer.

you can try to flash to other ROMs to see if battery life improves.

if you are having issues with poor battery life, I would suggest recalibrating your battery stats.

I followed these steps when I flashed over to serendipity 5.12 and my battery easily last a day with light/moderate use.

You know why Swype stopped working don't you? The Beta ran out. you have to uninstall it and get the new free beta version.

Cog 4.2.2 was my first flash and i actually love it. Feel like i bought a new phone with all the new features that it comes with compared to the stock captivate.

I dont use GPS at all so i couldnt even confirm the gps capability ,
As far as random reboots, that has never happend.

I would definetly recommend.

All of the ROMs but CM7 (which is still in "beta") use the Samsung File System (RFS) because they are all based on Samsung created ROMs.

There might be some out there based on the Nexus S, but I am not familiar with them.

Wrong. They all use ext4 because they all have Voodoo kernels. (There might be a *few* "non Voodoo" versions floating around, but you have to go hunting for them.)

Just flashed to COG 4.3 , it now has a cognition boot up screen which is pretty cool.

Just wanted to give an update on my experience. I tried both Cog 4.2 and stock froyo for about 5 days each.

(these are my personal experiences...other people may feel differently)

Cog 4.2 is slightly faster than stock. But that is where the big improvements end. For battery life, I would leave my phone on idle with 4.2 and it would drain to about nothing over the course of 12 hours without even using it. With stock, if I don't use it, the battery only loses about 20% over the course of the day (huge battery improvement). With heavy use (games and web), I found the battery to drain at about the same speed.

Swype for stock started working a lot better and is nearly flawless now after it's learned more of what I type. GPS for stock is a lot better (even after re-installing COG 4.2 several times, I could never get a lock on my GPS). Stock can usually get a pretty precise lock in about 5 seconds.

I also found weird little quirks in Cog 4.2. After hanging up on someone, their picture would stay on the screen for awhile for a second after closing the phone. I got weird lock ups on the notification pull down sometimes. And other things like that.

Stock isn't perfect, but after rooting, it has been extremely good and reliable. So I've decided to stick with a rooted stock froyo phone.
