Google Voice

Hmm...Now this is interesting. Some bridging number is showing up in my VZW billing statement. I know that if you called your google number the old fashioned way and press 2, pause, then dial the person you want to call, it will definitely work with the "Friends & Family" method.

So maybe the Google Voice app won't work like that and you can't simply add your Google Voice number to "Friends & Family"? You probably then would have to add that bridging number to your F&F. Maybe add both numbers to be on the safe side? I don't have F&F so that's my best guess...sorry!
I'll look at my statement, as it is about to roll over, and see what shows there. More than anything I want to make sure that it's the same bridging number everytime .... but I think it is.

I checked mine a few minutes ago and it is the same bridging number each time I call. But I don't know if they change that number like every month or whatever...or ever...you know? So that's a bit tricky.

Here's a blog that has a ton of GV info and tips:
How to Ease Your Transition to Google Voice - Google Voice - Lifehacker

I think there's another lifehacker article that talks about free GV calls, but I can't find it right now, and I'm heading out the door. I'll look for it later, or maybe someone else can find it.

You need to go into the Google Voice settings on the computer. Click Settings and then the Phones tab. Next, edit your cell phone and uncheck that box that forwards SMS to your cell.

Either do that or set your cell as a "work" phone and not a "mobile". The benefit of doing that is so you can have two Google Voice numbers forward to your cell, as opposed to only one if you set your cell number as "mobile"

Wow, this is pretty amazing information. Essentially, you can send and receive text messages using google voice without worrying about purchasing a text message plan from your carrier. the only caveat is that people won't initially recognize your google voice number when they receive a text message from you, but that can be quickly remedied. also, you can have your friends set up your google voice number as an "other" number in their contacts list and use that whenever they send you a text. very cool information indeed.

Can you still use the GV texting feature when you port your existing cell phone number rather than getting a new GV number? Also, is there a desktop app you can use like Skype?

You can have your GV number forward to any number (except another GV number). You just make the change in the settings online. Right now, there are a couple of desktop apps for texting, but not for calling yet. I just use the webpage if I want to send txts from the computer. You can initiate a call from the desktop, ie from the browser, but you can't carry on a conversation without using phone.

O.K. finally got my invite to GV about a week ago and during set-up , it ask if you want to use your current # or be issued a new #, I choose to keep my current #, Verizon issued ! Any pros or cons concerning this choice ?

Read through the thread ... there are NO cons to getting a Google Voice number. You can still use your cell number if you would like.

I think the voicemail transcription is funny. I can only imagine having that job of listening to e-mails and then writing them down for people (assuming it's not done by machines o.o). I have a funny transcription.

a while ago i found that google voice is completely transcribed by computers...it's google teaching their voice recognition software...what better way to improve software than putting it to work?

i had the same issue...looked at the site posted above...then tried again and it works perfect now.

i completely agree with the guy on there posting that not one google moderator has said anything even acknowledging the issue...and now that it's fixed all the grips will go away but for some - the experience of shit customer service will not.

Did you ever get an invite, i still have 1 left...

Hey whats up? Just saw your message/reply yesterday. No, I didn't get an invite yet. Do you by any chance still have that One Invite? If so, antnyp85@gmail.com or let me know what other info you may need? Thanks, that would be awesome!! If you don't have it anymore, let me know too. Thank you.

*EDIT* Received an Invite from a user, THANK YOU :-) Trying it out today for the first time.

Ive had the hardest time getting/finding a Google Voice invite :( If someone has an extra I would be eternally grateful! PM me if so. Thanks!!!

I also have one left. I would like for it to be to someone who will actually use it though. The other ones I sent out were wasted since none of my loser friends will give it a chance. Email oxfire @ gmail dawt com.

I have had Google Voice for about two weeks now. I have been checking daily to see if I have any invites to give, but no luck so far. How long do I have to wait to get invites to give?

spoke too soon apparently. yesterday it stopped working again...now just cleared the data for the dialer app in settings, and works...the plus sign is missing. so the problem is intermittent still!

also, since most of us are on friends/family - theoretically you don't need a high minutes plan if you add the GV number to your F/F list.....so thats unlimited minutes and unlimited txts for their cheapest plan + unlimited data...

Ok cool so this is my first day with Google Voice and so far it's pretty cool! Soo a random question that I don't see posted on here yet... I figured out how to get SMS to work... But how do you get MMS, or CAN you get MMS at all through Google Voice?

Also, has anyone figured out which number to add to the Friends & Family?? The bridging number or the actual google voice number?

And has anyone noticed Google Voice being a killer for your battery?? My battery was down to 30 percent after only 8 hours today..

You cannot send or receive MMS with Google Voice...yet. They know people want it so we'll see if it gets implemented.

To get free outgoing calls, add your bridging number to F&F. To get free incoming calls, add your Google Voice number and go to the Settings on the webpage and set it to display your Google Voice number when you receive a call. Of course, then you won't know who's calling...

Go into your Google Voice settings on the phone app and check how often your interval is for checking for texts. 5 minutes is the shortest interval, but that could be draining your battery? I currently have it set to Never and my GV emails my gmail whenever I get a text, and that's push email, so I don't have to worry about checking for new texts.

Hi all. New to the forum and I find that I could benefit very much from Google Voice, but I've been waiting for over a month and no invite after I requested one from Google. Anyone have one available? If so, boleap@gmail.com.

Btw, this forum rocks! Lots of good information here!

Hi Guys! So I signed up for google voice using a google number. I downloaded the voice application from the market and installed it to my droid. I have tried making the setting ask every time I make a call AND use google voice for every call but it is not working! It just makes the cal through Verizon. I do not get the google voice notification at the bottom of the current call screen! Any ideas?! Thanks!

BTW when I call into my google number it allows me to place a call out!

I've been waiting for 5 weeks for my invite!!! I'm desperate. Any extra invites would be much appreciated. Please PM me if you have on and u will give you my email.

I just wanted to add that if you use any app besides the official Google Voice app, such as GV Dialer, you'll have to add your Google Voice number to your F&F if you want to get free outgoing calls. GV Dialer will call your google number first, then run the script to make an outgoing call...like when you call your own number, press 2, dial number, press #.

If you don't have Friends & Family, then don't worry about it.

Oh, one more thing...if you give out your Google number out and someone has Verizon and he/she calls you, it will be free for you if their Caller ID shows up on your phone (since we have free IN calling). It'll cost them minutes during the weekday, but not you.

Ever since I "upgraded" Google Voice to v0.3, the app FCs each time I turn my Eris on. After clearing the FC, I restart GV and it seems to be stable.

Anyone else experience this pattern?

Yup. I've been having the same problem since the upgrade--so about a week or so now. I tried reinstalling GV but nothing changed, it still bombed on phone startup.

I decided to uninstall completely and do without until they get it fixed.
