Help "Updates Available" notification - need some help

Today I had an "Updates Available" notification in the notification bar. When I opened it, it took me to my downloaded apps, but at that point I didn't know if I needed to do something or not. It never showed what the updates were for, and I couldn't tell if it did anything automatically or not. I ended up just backing out to my home screen, and the notification was gone. Can someone explain what I need to do when I get the "Updates Available" notification? Thanks.

You have to click on the app that needs to be updated
then you click "Update" then it will update your app

How do you know which app needs to be updated? In my case, after clicking on the notification and it then going to my downloaded apps, there were only three showing, out of the 10 or so I've installed. Does it only show the apps that need updating?

If you go yo the Market, click menu button, click my apps, there it will show you if an app needs to be updated
