Root navigation on syndicate

hi all =). i've been lurking around here for about a year now, mainly looking for ways to make whatever phone i had more tolerable. i hadn't wanted to mess with rooting before for fear of messing things up, so i'm new to this.

last night, i used the video provided in tips and tricks (thanks so much!), and rooted to:
syndicate frozen, launcher pro version
firmware 2.2.1
kernel version 2.6.32.9
build # srf1.1.0/twilight zone 1.1.0

one of the main reasons i stayed with android was for the google navigation, as i knew i'd be moving and learning a new area. since rooting, i constantly get an error to force close google maps, and haven't figured out how to get navigation back.

is there a way to acquire/run google navigation on a rooted phone? is there a tutorial anywhere? thanks.

sorry to hear about this, the best way to fix it is either go into settings > applications and then google maps/navigation and wipe data.. if this does not solve it a full wipe will. again sorry to hear that you are having problems

I went ahead and rerooted last night, but didn't include the syndicate rom, and am hating it. This phone just doesn't live up to its potential without beung modded.

Would it be worth attempting to install the rom again? Is there something I may have gotten wrong in the process, or does that just happen sometimes? Thanks so much for responding!

your best bet is to start from a fresh clean stock slate,

install clockwork mod 3, download the latest version of SFR
boot into recovery and let it convert you to ext4, then wipe data/cache/dalvik
flash the rom, make a backup nandroid, then restore that nandroid.. will enable journalling which should stop most problems :)

Thanks for the instructions on how to turn journaling on. I did a few battery pulls this week, and I'm sure it corrupted my data in some way. This morning was the nail in the coffin. So I'm following your instructions. Thanks again.

I'm..very new to this, and basically have no idea what it is you've told me. I am pretty much the newest n00b in terms of modding phones.

What is clockwork mod? Would installing it be a similar process to what I went through to install syndicate? And what's this journaling I keep hearing about? I haven't found anything that dumbs things down well enough, most descriptions keep using rooting/roming jargon, so I keep getting lost.

eta: also nandroid..?

Heh, my first suggestion would be to read more on rooting and what everything is. Rooting your phone isn't something that should be taken lightly, especially when you're taking the chance of turning a $600 phone into a paperweight.

Anyway, clockwordmod is what is used to root your phone and to flash ROMs. It's a simple little thing, blocky letters, black and orange (I think) color scheme. You use the volume buttons to navigate the options and such. You've used it before, if you rooted and flashed, you just didn't know it by name.

If you have a rooted phone, you have CWM (clockwork mod). Since you're running Syndicate, you now have an EXT file system, instead of RFS, as it was when it came out of the phone. Rooting with CWM 3.0.0.5/6 converts this for you automatically. This is why you had to flash the ROM before rebooting the phone after first rooting.

A nandroid backup is simply using the backup feature within CWM. It creates an entire backup of your whole phone so in case you hose it, you can get back to where you were. Very handy.

The ACS fellas decided to remove journaling (kind of like a journal/diary for your phone about what goes on) to make it a bit quicker. However, as a result of this, the data is liable to become corrupt if you don't have a proper shutdown. Like if you pull the battery. That's not proper and you will probably have corruption which leads to force closes all over the place.

If you restore said nandroid backup, this re-enables journaling. I would strongly suggest doing this since you're new to all of this, and it's just a safer environment to work in.

Shabby knows his stuff, and is part of the ACS crew. They put out a great product. I'm still running 1.0.2 (an earlier version than you) because, well, it rocks. There have been a few issues with 1.1 (which you're running now) so I decided to stay put and frankly, I'm glad I did.

I'm eagerly awaiting the dev to get his phone back so he can drop 1.1.1 which I'll probably jump on pretty quickly. Keep on reading up on this stuff, and you'll get familiar with all the jargon soon. I was just as noobish as you were about 4-6 weeks ago, so it doesn't take long to know your way around things, assuming you have a slightly techincal background anyway.

thanks for explaining things; i *had* been trying to look around/read up on things, but hadn't found simple explanations of necessary things as of yet.

when i rerooted, i'd gone back to froyo 2.1, allowed it to update to 2.2, and then went in to root it. since then, i've gotten the shoddiest battery life ever. i'm going to try unrooting again, then redoing everything up to syndicate.. i should be able to get through a day on one charge with light to moderate use.

two questions: has anyone else had problems using navigation with the standard syndicate?
after installing syndicate, do i need to leave the .zip file on the sd card?

how does one go about restoring said backup? is it an option in cwm? did a clean do-over and everything was great.. until i tried to use my camera. force closed repeatedly, froze phone, caused it to start going into a black and white type thing. had to battery pull. camera still doesn't work.

I don't have any problems using the navigation on Syndicate standard (note: not fully loaded). Yes, you most certainly want to leave the .zip file on your SD card should you need to reflash it for whatever reason.

If you've found the place to make a nandroid backup, you've found the place to restore it as well. Instead of choosing "Backup" you just choose "Restore" and then select the one with the date you want to restore to.

As far as the camera goes, I would suggest reflashing the ROM. I've read about people having camera issues and reflashing the ROM has always seemed to help.

Battery life on 2.2 (Froyo) was kind of hit or miss it seemed like. Some people reported their batter was WAY worse after the Froyo upgrade, while some people, like me, said battery life was way BETTER after the upgrade to Froyo.

I didn't last long on stock 2.2 myself, maybe a few days. I almost immediately switched over to syndicate's ROM and haven't looked back. I've thought about trying some other ROMs (midnight and bonsai) but I really don't want to mess with a good thing.
