Root ROM flash failed, stuck at samsung screen

Newbie
So last week I was bored and decided to flash my epic 4g running ec05 with a different ROM. Basically followed the instructions found here:
One Click Root & Recovery for the Epic 4G! v2.5.5 Now has ClockworkMod Redirector! - xda-developers
and the rooting part was easy. This also installed clockwork 3.0.2.x and then I followed instructions on booting into clockwork and installed the ROM zip I copied to my SD card. I wiped the settings and cleared the cache 3x like the tutorial said and then I installed the ROM (syndicate ROM frozen) successfully but upon reboot it just got stuck at the samsung screen. I tried wiping and installing the same ROM again with no luck and after that I tried 2 more roms (midnight and nebula) with th same result. I was able to use ODIN and get it back to stcok 2.1 and then upgraded to 2.2 and re-rooted but have not tried to flash another ROM yet. Upon the first boot into CWM 3.0.2.x does it convert your file system to ext4?

Ok, if i have read what you have done, the 2.5 wont work with the above mentioned roms except nebula. I havent played with that one so dont know if it is ext4 or rfs based. But yet you say you have cwm 3.0. 2x? I do know people are having issues with that version and has been recommended to use cwm 3.0.0.5/6 and that can be found in the wip sticky. I would odin to stock and redo cwm but use 3.0. 0.5/6 and should work fine.

I will give try using CWM 3.0.0.5/6 when I have a chance and get back to you. Thanks for the tip!! Also, any ROM's you recommend in particular?

I had the same issue attempting to do exactly what you did. You need to flash Vision kernel to convert to ext4 file system. Then that rom should work.

As stated before, you should really only use CWM 3.0.0.5/6 and nothing else. There have been many problems reported with the newer version, so I personally would stay away.

Rooting with this method will convert your file system to EXT4 which is what you're looking for. Once you root, DON'T REBOOT, but flash the ROM first. Then reboot. Chances are, it could turn into a bad flash. Yank the battery, put it back in and get back into CWM and reflash the ACS ROM and you'll be smooth sailing my friend.

EDIT: Oh, and if you want added stability (journaling) as soon as you verify it's a good flash, be sure to head back to CWM and make a backup, also known as a nandroid backup. Immediately restore it as this will re-enable journaling.

Actually if you odin back to either eb13 or ec05 you dont need to flash a rom, you can be stock with ext 4.

Look down to where it says "new for eb13" and op states that. Just a fyi ;-) still not a bad idea by any means to have your rom on your card ready to flash before hand just in case.

And one final question lol whats the difference between DK28 and EC05? aren't they both Froyo? New to Android so just trying to understand.

DK28 was a leak not an official release
EC05 was a Samsung release

If you are going to odin back to an older release I say go back to DI18
Then you can start over with rooting and flashing new rom

Then he should be more clear on this:

8. IF YOU ARE ON AN ODEXED ROM (DEFAULT OTA) THEN YOU NEED TO REFLASH A ROM AFTER THE CONVERSION!!!!!!! ODEXED ROMS DO NOT GET RESTORED PROPERLY!

Now I know, and I'll try this one out. :)

Totally agree with you. I think that the dev, one of the very best that we have for our phones btw, just has so many projects going that cleaning up his op on that thread may have fallen thru the cracks.

HI guys new to the forums. I have an Epic and I just rooted it and got the syndicate ROM on my SD but unfortunately when I rooted it gave me clockworkmod 2.5.1. So I wiped everything and then tried to install the new ROM but it wouldn't work because my filesystem is still RFS not EXT4. So now I'm stuck with a recovery screen. I did a nandroid backup and have tried restoring both with boot and system and neither worked. Can't restore at all from the phone. Can anyone help me? I'm desperate and an exceptionally fast learner...

If you have CWM 2.5.1, then you just used the wrong (old) package to root. You'll have to Odin back to stock, then probably re-root using the last version, and with that, you'll have the latest version of clockwork.

Odin to Stock

Root with this

You'll then need to upgrade to this CWM after rooting.

Latest version of SRF - This will point you to XDA, the download is actually at ACS's website. Doesn't include a kernel, so after flashing this but BEFORE rebooting, you'll need to flash a kernel to go along with it. I suggest this one.

Things to have on your SD card to get this done:

1. CWM upgrade
2. SRF ROM
3. Kernel of your choice
