Help k-9 email client won't open attachments

Hi.
I switched email clients from the AT&T one that the Captivate came with because messages weren't forwarding properly (they were forwarding the subject line but not the actual message). So I started using K-9 email and the forwarding works great but now I can't open images or pdf files that people email me. I've downloaded Astro and OI File Manager and they still won't open. Images never fully load and when I try to open a pdf, it tells me the file is corrupt - which it's not.

Any suggestions or is there another email client that functions completely?

I haven't been able to find anything else, and am a bit amazed that this basic functionality isn't built in. I think the iPhone had it for about the last 4 years... Sad.
