Help Can the Aria be set to "E" instead of "3G"?

I have weak reception at work, and an told me that I may get more bars if I can un-select 3G.

Look at:
Settings > Wireless Networks > Mobile Networks > Network Mode

I believe "GSM" is EDGE and WCDMA is 3G (or H if rooted)

They use different frequencies, so it could be that GSM setting will result in a stronger signal strength than WCDMA. The potential benefit would be a more reliable connection, which could be preferred if you are waiting for important voice calls or messages. The potential downside would be a drop in data transfer speed.

If your building has WiFi that you can access, another option would be to utilize that for data transfer and possibly VOIP.

My "Mobile Networks" menu brings up only the following options:

Data Roaming (checkbox)
Access Point Names
Network Operators
Enable always-on mobile ... (checkbox)


Maybe it's a reduced HTC thing?

Select Phone information
Scroll to Preferred Network Type and change:

WCDMA preferred to GSM auto(PRL) to get better battery life and still get 3G.
Change to GSM only to keep from registering with 3G cells.

It means for data you will not get 3G/WCDMA, only GPRS or EDGE. I've found the GSM auto(PRL) to be a much better option than WCDMA preferred , I suspect because its not always trying to hold/obtain a weak WCDMA connection.
