Help SDcard is mounted READ ONLY.. help

Extreme Android User
i have had my 16GB class 6 card for 5 months and it has been doing great..

a month ago i got the amazon appstore and have downloaded 25 apps and installed them fine.

last Thursday i started to have issues getting apps to download. they would hang after about 15%.
I would then get and error about the sdcard. something read only.

over they weekend i tried many things.. battery pulls... put the sdcard in my laptop and tested and for virus...

in the main menu settings .. sd card .. is listed at "read only".. it has 5.7 GB free still.

i have been rooted and running Myn's Warm Z since it was released in February. I have not made any changes....

has anyone seen this??? and what is the solution???

thanks! :)

Just had this same issue. Connect to PC, open folder to view SD card. Right click, properties, tools, check disk. Should fix ya up.

yeah.. i had tried that too.. it failed to access card data...
but i every file was fine... apps that where moved to SDcard ran fine and i could view all my pics.

i did notice that all the files where read only? i could not find any place to make the SDcard not read only.

i was able to highlight all the files and go to property and turn off that attribute.. and turn off archive too.
I think that totally f-ed me up. now the phone can not access the files.

i think I have to reformat the scard and loose every thing

So you can't even access the card at all anymore? This is what I would have suggested earlier, as a first step:

1) Open the terminal emulator.
2) su
3) mount -o remount,rw /mnt/sdcard

That would attempt to force it to remount in rw mode. If nothing else, you might at least get some errors as to why it won't mount in rw. Otherwise, it might have actually worked.

now... i can see the files..

on pc...
i can see the files.. but can not open even a pic to view.

on the phone..
it mounts.. but apps that are moved to sdcard do not open or show icons.

i think i have screwed all the file properties..

i also think the file format was corrupted from the beginning.

i dont think there is a way back from this.. other than format the Card.. I am going to do a full format fat 32 from the pc...

what do you think?

Ok have you tried to take the card out, put it in the PC, copy the entire contents to your Hard Drive and then put the card back in and Format it. Then plug your phone in via USB and copy back all the contents?

wish i could... i tried to copy some of the important files out:
nandroid backups.. pics ... and stuff...before I did anything!!!

but files would not copy out!!!! they error-ed out!
odd errors... like "directory is to deep"

i even thought maybe the sdcard was full (even though it says I have 5.7GB free)... so I wanted to delete somethings.. again it would not let me do that either.

it is screwed!... so should I format?

yeah sounds like reformatting might be the only way to go. What brand is the SD card by the way? Is it possible it is one of those Chinese cards that is labeled as way more space than it actually has? They make them and then hack them to actually loop and delete things but to show 16gb or 32gb or whatever as total storage even though they are much smaller. Another possibility is that you have a bad memory section and the card is failing/toast. A last possibility is you have some App that is locking the SD card down for some unknown reason.

the brand is Transcend 16GB class 6.

it all started when I tried to download the a game from amazon.. it was their free app for the day: "majestry: the fantasy"
i have been downloading amazon apps just fine.
and i have not heard of any others having this issue with that app. so i dont think it was the problem.

ok.. i will format the sucker.. what a pain in the ass.

Oh shit....

Now... my pc will not format it.
It starts... then errors out.. widows can not complete the format.

And now i can not get into the drive at all

Oh I would have actually used the phone to format it by hitting menu>settings>sd&phone storage>Unmount SD Card and then Format SD Card but it sounds like the card is toast and has been slowly failing

Yeah... after i posted... i tried the phone to format.. and it worked.

Installed the app that started this... and it was fine

I will be spending my night getting crap back on

Yeah, it sounds like you may have messed up permissions or attributes of some kind. You may have been able to fix it by running something on your phone to fix file permissions. Sometimes that gets messed up, and causes weird problems like this. You may have been able to save it before that first format attempt. But on he bright side, it sounds like it's not longer mounting in ro mode, right? If it happens again, try some of the other troubleshooting steps, first, before formatting.

ok.. here is an issue.. by product...

i had a number of apps .. moved to sd card.

it looks like they still have parts in internal memory...
but they will not run.. because the other part is gone from the SDcard.

the internal memory is low because they are there.
i go to amazon appstore.. shows that they are installed. but there is no uninstall option. I normally use appbrain to unistall them, but appbrain does not see them at all.

what to do? other than wipe and reload my myn warmz rom

Go to manage applications, then select the on sdcard tab. You will see a list of apps that are "installed" that are on the sdcard. When the sdcard is wiped, they stay there, but are recognizable by the package name, only (usually com.whatever). From there, you can select each one, and uninstall it.

Or, with root, you can just selectively remove from /data/app, /data/app-private, and /data/data/, but that's tad riskier. It's faster, though, if you have a lot.
