HTC Gingerbread update.

From HTC UK Facebook Page:

"We know a number of you are frustrated about Vodafone customers receiving the Gingerbread update for the HTC Desire HD ahead of everyone else. In this particular instance, Vodafone UK's variant of the Gingerbread update was approved as part of Vodafone's broader European software approval process and distributed by HTC as part of the European roll-out. We are working closely with all the other UK operators to ensure their HTC Incredible S and HTC Desire HD customers receive the update soon and will confirm a date for roll-out as soon as we can. In the interim, we ask you to please bear with us and would like to thank you for your continued support."

Don't know why the link isn't working....

Ok, so it appears as though HTC & the networks may have a different opinion of what constitutes a branded and an unbranded handset. Whilst I have no orange bloatware on my phone, my build number is still 1.72.405.3, according to HTC, I still have a branded handset.

It also looks like the rollout is taking place over the course of a month as opposed to a few days -

John: Hi Ryan
Ryan: Hi John, thank you for contacting HTC Support, I’m looking in to your query now.
Ryan: the 2.3 update was rolled out on the 4th of may and we aim for all devices to get this update by the end of may. branded devices may take a little longer as we await the network codes so the update can work on branded devices. if your device is unbranded then the update should be with you shortly, the updates are sent out in batch order and we cannot notify how long this will take however as it has been rolled out it should be with you shortly.
John: magic, cheers
John: but rollout to unbranded handsets has commenced in the UK though yeah?
Ryan: yes
John: one more thing if that is ok?
John: I got my handset direct from Orange, to all intents and purposes, it looks unbranded. There is no Orange software and the build number is 1.72.405.3. Am I unbranded or am I branded?
Ryan: do you have the IMEI number?
John: yes, it's 42
Ryan: thank you
Ryan: the device is an orange branded device
John: ok, thank you very much for your time
Ryan: Is there anything else I can help you with today?
John: no, that's everything, you've been very helpful
John: thanks again
Ryan: Thank you for contacting us, I hope you have a great day
John: you too

He could be wrong, I got my handset a few days after it was released so it might not have any of the orange build, but HTC still class it as branded.

Afaik they are referring to the network lock and not the installed software from the network operator, your handset (and mine) have no orange apps installed (well i installed the orange account one) but as they are from a set network they know by the IMEI that its locked. If you go pay

Hi all,

In case anyone cares, upgrade is available in France.
Just did it a couple of hours ago.
Smooth process (about 20 mn) and doesn't look like I lost anything...

Will post later if I have anything intelligent to add...

Unlocked, Unbranded "NRJ Mobile" SIM (SFR MVNO)
Android 2..3.3
Baseband : 12.54.60.25U_26.09.04.11_M2
Kernel : 2.6.35.10-g0956377
Build : 2.36.405.8 CL47853

Where did you buy your phone from?

My local Orange shop, but as mentioned previously, there is no Orange logo and apart from My Orange which was self installed and the Orange+ SIM toolkit, there's nothing on the phone to say it's Orange. I've a colleague who bought their handset sim free on amazon who is using an Orange SIM and we had all the same apps pre installed. I even got the buggy 2.2.1 (1.72.405.3) update so I'm 99% postitive, I'm unbranded.

Get your friend to chat with HTC and give his IMEI and see what they say then? I'd give it a dig now but java is disabled at work. If not I'll get in touch with them when I get home to check mine.

Maybe when HTC sold the phone to Orange they automatically put in their database that the phone is now branded to Orange but Orange never actually went through with it and installed their software in the end???

Interesting, My DHD was bought from CPW unbranded, with o2 sim card
Software number is 1.72.405.3, No signs of brand logos or software changes. Works perfectly fine, still waiting for 2.3 update as well. :(

I have chatted with HTC and given them my IMEI number. They told me that despite downgrading to the unbranded version of 2.2 the phone is technically still Vodafone branded so it will come from them and not HTC............ maybe it's time to just flash a custom ROM :\

After watching this video, and seeing only minor changes I still want it badly!

YouTube - HTC Desire HD Android Gingerbread 2.3.3

The subtly differences make this look like a very good update.

Turn the volume down as the music on there is very repetitive and irritating, and the text on the video is in French but I'm sure you'll be able to work out what is being said.

According to HTC yes....... this has just confused me too much now. Think I'm gonna wait until the end of the month, if I don't have it then I'll flash a custom ROM based on it

I reckon people just need to be patient now, a lot of the same questions are being raised lol. It's coming at some point, we just don't know when (I'm getting reminded of bloody PS3 forums here now :D)

That was my afterthought too. I thought that as Orange were so desperate to get the handset out for launch, they sent a load of handsets out with the base HTC software on.

Looks unbranded yeah?

Exact same as mine bud so I'd hope it is unbranded!
