Release date: 6/24 nationwide; 6/21 for SP members.

It was released on June 4th, granted it wouldn't be a year to the day Like June 3rd would be (June 10th would be a year and a week) but it doesn't really matter. The iPhone 3G wasn't released exactly a year after the first but it was still part of the marketing.
Well the iPhone wasn't talking about the first 3D (or 2D, or any other) movie in their marketing either, lol.

By the way, June 10th was not actually the first 3D movie. It was the first time a group of people paid to watch 3D content, but it was not the first 3D movie.

I highly doubt Sprint is even considering that in the slightest. It is far, far more relevant that the original Evo was released a year ago, than some group of people paid to watch something in 3D in 1915, lol.

Like I said, we're just going to have to agree to disagree. There is nothing you can tell me that will make me think the first time a group of people paid to watch 3D content in 1915 is more important than the anniversary of the 1st Evo (when we're talking about the release of the next Evo).

And when it's released, we'll see if Sprint mentions the first time a group of people paid to watch 3D content, lol. I'm pretty sure they won't.

Never said it was more important, never said Sprint would use it, and they probably won't. I said it was the more clever marketing idea.

Now now, children! :-p My take: June 3rD is cute but contrived. It kinda sounds like a bad pun that someone is trying to make at the HS lunch table and then all their friends just groan. That being said, I enjoy corny puns (even terrible ones). Tying in with June 10th might not make that much sense, but tying in with the first 3D movie-going experience is a great idea. They could very easily release it on the 3rd and still tie in to that notion. I can see them showing some reproduction of people watching the old movie in black and white with the goofy glasses and then bring it into color with eyepopping 3D effects (as much as you can have with a 2D TV ad). They would tie it in to innovative cutting edge technology with a "then and now" sort of theme. I think that would be an excellent, very clever idea.

To BlackDynamite: I get your point too, but I seriously doubt Sprint is all that concerned with releasing the phone exactly 1 year after the Evo 4G. Besides, June 3rd (while being 52 weeks) is only 364 days from the Evo's release (a full 1.25 days short). This means the phone will actually be released June 4th at 2pm ;-) So I'm exaggerating to prove a point. You both are picking dates that aren't exactly a year for the purpose of being able to say "one year ago." The difference is that you are claiming yours is more important because it is exact (when it actually isn't) :-p You all make good points, but none of them really provide good evidence for a release date.

Moral of the story: Great idea, drexappeal! Haters back off ;-)

Yes, it would be a year- in the same sense that Thanksgiving is a year later, daylight savings time is a year later, Labor Day, and so on.

Lets put it like this, if Vegas was putting odds on Sprint's reason for a release date, the anniversary of the original Evo would be way, WAY higher than the first time a group of people paid to watch 3D content back in 1915.

To be honest, I can't even believe anyone is arguing this. Just because you think it's clever? lol. Jon Stewart is pretty clever but that doesn't mean Sprint is going to release it on his birthday.

In Sprint's press release

Sprint Newsroom | Sprint Awarded Big Honors for HTC EVO 3D, HTC EVO View 4G, Kyocera Echo, MiFi 3G/4G Mobile Hotspot by Novatel Wireless and Google Voice at International CTIA Wireless 2011

it says "Available this summer exclusively from Sprint"

so if that Vodafone date is true that'd point to a pretty sure sign that we're looking at a launch sometime in June right?

I just want a new phone already dammit..I'm using a LG Rumor lol..this will be my first smartphone..we we we so excited

I'm pretty sure it means exclusive to sprint in the US market.

From a marketing stand point keeping with Sprint's "Firsts", the anniversary of the first 3D movie ever is pretty clever. And that date isn't far after the Evo release a year ago. And I am in marketing, I would use that!

There u go. I work with marketing and promotions on a daily basis too.

I would think the anniversary of the Evo is way more significant from a marketing perspective, than the anniversary of some 3D movie that nobody even knows about. At least it is when we are talking about the launch of the next Evo.

I'd love to hear the marketing pitch you'd use based on a 1 year anniversary to the general public because I don't know anybody that could come up with a creative enough marketing pitch, using the 1 year anniversary, as the main sell to the general public. Lol....i can just see it now, "come get the new evo 3D, one year after the evo 4g was released." Yeah, that's the campaign that's gonna sell the general public on the evo3d.

Are you serious???

Here's a start...
"A year ago we brought you the first 4G phone. Now we bring you the next Evolution."

Or...
(only sent to current Evo owners)
"A year ago you made history with the first 4G phone. Now use your yearly upgrade and get the new Evo 3D." (and I know a lot of people don't get the full yearly upgrade anymore, but the vast majority still get some kind of yearly discount, and lots still get a full upgrade)

Or...
"Others are still trying to get their 4G situations worked out. We launched America's first 4G phone a year ago. On June 3rd (or whatever), we'll release what other companies will hope to have next year. Experience the future, now."

There is no end to marketing campaigns that could tout the Evo's year anniversary. It might be different if the Evo wasn't such a huge success. But with the Evo basically saving Sprint from the grave, being the first phone to do so many things, and really demonstrating Sprint's advantages over other carriers, they almost HAVE to market the next Evo as the successor to the OG Evo.

I am really suprised we havent seen a leak yet. Usually we would see computer screen shot or something showing the phons in Sprints system.

June 3rd is in 2 weeks. I really really wish Sprint will make me be wrong but, I find it almost impossible this phone will come out in 2 weeks with us seeing absolutely nothing.

Unless it will be thje quickets release ever with everything just coming out at once.

Middle June more probable.

I'm beginning to thing the middle of June or July is more likely now as well. It could be that Sprint does a great job at making sure there are no early leaks. Take the Nexus S for example the only leak that I saw prior to the official announcement date was the training on the device on April 20th and the official announcement on April 26th and the phone released on May 8th (less than 2 weeks after the official announcement). Now if I use the same logic/timeframe that Sprint used for the Nexus S for all those hoping for a June 3rd release I'd think that Sprint has until Tuesday next week to announce it. Of course my logic could be flawed.

Sprint may have taken a page out of Apple's book. Apple is hard on the leaks, too. Part of their marketing blitz.

I also hope for a June 3rd release, but mid June is looking more likely.

I would say the same thing.

If we dont here something by Sprint by beginning of next week this will definetly be a middle June or July release.

Starting next Thursday many people will be traveling for the Holiday weekend. News outlets are also very slow at that time. So if Sprint doesnt say something soon we most likely wont here anything from them until first week of June.

While talking to the Radio Shack manager who called me he seemed to imply (albeit very loosely) that it would be towards the end of June that it was coming out. The fact that they have not set a release date in stone has me a bit worried and it would certainly make sense that they feel confident it will be ready to roll sooner rather than later.

Just from a business perspective I would think somewhere around a week to two weeks before the July 4th holiday would make the most sense. You can push a lot of marketing around filming your holiday in 3d, and you can take advantage of the social reach a new phone would have as well during the holiday. You want to capture as much buzz on your release as possible.

The company I work for's president and CFO are going to be in a luxury suite at the All Star race here in Charlotte promoting our product line. They are going to have access to all the Sprint sponsored private events. I'll ask them to check on the 3d for me. I'm sure some Sprint bigwigs will be there.

You are the one that starting arguing it. I simply said that it was clever and I can see the commercial. Yes it is an obscure piece of information but it can add some character to a "year ago" campaign. If Vegas did put odds on it the odds of Sprint doing the year anniversary would absolutely be higher, but the pay off on the latter would be greater.
And Jon Stewart is a person not an idea so it doesn't really correlate but if John Stewart had invented 3D cameras or movies or whatever then yes his birthday might work.

I mostly agree with this; and one of the additions to the campaign could use the 3d movie tie in to add to it.
Let me repeat what I am saying:
1) I think the tie in with 3d is clever
2) I think the year anniversary still applies even though it is 7 days later (and yes I know it still isn't the first Friday in June)
3) I do not think that Sprint is going to use that particular 3d idea
4) I hope beyond hope that it is released on the 3rd but who knows

Picture this though: Think of the Evo Firsts commercial

A visual timeline starting on June 10th, 1915 (even though some 3-d patents were filed in the 1890's) with 3d testing in a theater, September 1922 first viewing by a paying audience, 1953 Huge year for 3d movies, the 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's, 2000's, (images or clips from 3d films in all the years), 2010 movies like Avatar, 2011 Show the Evo3d. "June 2010 we brought you America's First 4g Phone. Today , 96 years in the making, we bring you America's first 3d phone. No Glasses Required for this Evolution" Or something along these lines.

Thanks. Sounds a little boring to me, IMO. If I'm looking in from the outside and I didn't get the original EVO, I'm looking at that marketing campaign and thinking, "Okay, so why is this one that much better than the one that was released 1 year ago. The one released a year ago looks pretty good to me and costs cheaper." Good marketing is built off many different areas, so while it's possible that could be used as a singular "sell," it's not necessarily something that I find would be enticing enough to the general public to get "wow'd" into buying it.

If you don't mind me asking, what exactly do you do for a living that has you convinced the 6/3 date could be used as a primary marketing campaign?

But to get this back on topic, we'll just have to wait and see what the actual release date is.

All of those that I listed would be the first line in a 30 second commercial. of course they would show you the phone and tell you about what makes it awesome throughout the remaining 25 seconds of the commercial, lol.

You are the one that starting arguing it. I simply said that it was clever and I can see the commercial.

That is not entirely true. I asked:

You think the first 3D movie is more significant than the first Evo???

And you replied:

I think the tie in between the first 3d movie and the first 3d phone is very clever, yes. And again you can still use the "A year ago we gave you the first 4g phone, etc".

So apparently you quoted my question, and then answered "yes" to a question that I never asked. I took your answer to be "yes" to my question, with the rest of it explaining why (and anyone can easily see how that happened- you quoted my yes or no question and replied "yes" with an explanation). Apparently what you really meant was "no" and then a but...

And if only this commercial you cats are talking about existed - then we'd know something! :) ;)
I have no doubt that we would see this commercial soon if the phone was ready. I think Sprint wants this phone for sale on 6-3, the only holdup is the bugs might not be worked out.
