BB curve to BH2

Hey all--I've been wanting to jump on the Android train for quite some time, and recently became upgrade eligible on Tmo. I'm locked into a family plan with my wife, so I'm hugely disappointed with the N1 pricing--I followed (more like stalked ;-)) it from rumor to reality, but I can't drop $530 on it just to keep my plan, and I'm keeping the plan for now. I'm gambling on the BH2--the red-headed stepchild of Android--because I think it can be the ugly duckling with either an official update or rooted with stock Android. The camera, screen, and 320MB RAM are certainly attractive, and $99 from Amazon plus a free bluetooth didn't hurt either. It's supposed to arrive today, so I'm pretty excited to check it out when I get home from work.

I'm planning on keeping the BH2 factory for a while, but with Open Home or GDE, and then trying to root it--hopefully there will be a ROM for 1.6 or 2.* by then, and hopefully I can figure out how to do it right. I've never done anything quite like that, and I'm a lawyer who's not too well versed in tech  You can bet I will read up extensively before I ask questions, but I beg your patience in advance if my noobiness shows. Thanks all for your contributions to these forums!
